We've been fans of Brandi Carlile for a long time. So we have to say that startling excellence of her new album, Bear Creek, isn't a complete surprise. We could see this coming.

But wow, what an album. Yes, the new single, "That Wasn't Me" -- which she performed last night on Leno's show, and which is the subject of her music video featuring Kris Kristofferson -- is great. But it's really only scratching the surface. I'm eager to see what happens when "100" hits the airwaves.

Anyway, we here in Seattle are awfully proud of this hometown girl. And what a role model she is for 11-year-olds like my daughter.

FWIW, Brandi is a proud Seattleite too. See below.

Late Night Music Club with Ed Shaughnessy and Buddy Rich

My old man (now many years dead) was deeply flawed in many ways. But one thing he always did was make sure I stayed up with him to watch "The Tonight Show" whenever Buddy Rich was ripping skins.

Thanks, Dad.

C&L'S Late Night Music Club With Tommy Newsom

Here's That Rainy Day
Tommy Newsom, 78, a jazz saxophonist and arranger who gained national visibility as a key member of Johnny Carson's "Tonight Show" band for three decades, and whom Carson drolly nicknamed "Mr. Excitement" for his stone-faced looks and somber outfits, died April 28 at his home in Portsmouth, Va. He had bladder and liver cancer. Read more...

This is a clip from Tommy performing with Doc Severinsen on David Letterman's tribute show for Johnny Carson, January 21st, 2005.

Lyrics:

Presidents come and presidents go
They rise like smoke they fall like snow
Do you believe the things you say
Your lofty thoughts are filled with hay
What is this faith that you profess
That led to this colossal mess
When you awaken from this coma
You'll find you were in Oklahoma
When you crawl out of this self delusion
You're going to need a soul transfusion

This version of the world will not be here long
It is already gone It is already gone
This version of the world will not be here long
It is already gone It is already gone."

You can pick it up here.
