I'm running (or will have run by the time this is posted) my first 50k trail race today and this song is, pun intended, running through my head. Although I won't be running to find heroin, I expect that it will get pretty psychedelic.

There are a million foot races honoring this holiday weekend, and this George Jones classic is stuck in my head as I prepare for a 5k. I just wish I could run in one of those suits.

Before there was rock'n'roll-- just before-- there were The Platters. And before the Doors, Love, X or Black Flag came along, The Platetrs were the L.A. Sound. The band had a string of worldwide smashes-- "Only You," "The Great Pretender," "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," "My Prayer," "Twilight Time," "Harbor Lights," and... "The Magic Touch" from the mid-50's into the mid-60's. The song popped into my head yesterday when I heard the GOP was sending Vice President Dick Cheney to northern Mississippi to use his magic touch in today's congressional race down there.

If there really were UFOs, wouldn't Ron Paul be doing better in the race for the Republican nomination? The Byrds did a lot of songs about UFOs back in the sixties, this one, "Hey Mr. Spaceman," from Fifth Dimension, the ultimate psychedelic album, the best known.
