A group of veteran pranksters have stepped forward to say they are responsible for a series of fake news releases sent out Monday that claimed Canada had committed to drastic greenhouse gas emission cuts.

The U.S.-based Yes Men told The Associated Press they launched the complicated hoax to expose what the group feels is Canada's failure to take tough action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

A first fake announcement released around 8 a.m. ET Monday claiming to originate from Environment Canada said Canada had drastically changed its greenhouse gas emission reduction targets to levels preferred by environmentalists. The cuts in emissions cited were significantly greater than those Canada has publicly committed to.

Reporters who received the announcement at the United Nations climate change summit in Copenhagen were skeptical, however, as the stance in the email seemed particularly far off the government's public comments to date.

The broadly distributed email attributed quotes to Environment Minister Jim Prentice, who is in Copenhagen representing Canada at the summit, which the United Nations hopes will lead to a replacement agreement to the Kyoto Protocol that expires in 2012. Read more at the CBC

Amy Goodman weighed in on Democracy Now about her detention at the Canadian border and what it might mean for assuring that there is still a free press in Canada and that journalists are not intimidated into not covering stories that the government thinks are harmful to corporate interests.

Full segment and transcript available at Democracy Now.

JUAN GONZALEZ: That report from Kathy Tomlinson of CBC. But, Amy—Thanksgiving—tell us more about exactly what happened when you were stopped.

AMY GOODMAN: Well, Juan, it was really incredible. It was Wednesday, the evening before Thanksgiving, and we’re headed to the Vancouver Public Library, driving up from Seattle. When we got to the border, I thought it was just going to be routine. We handed in our passports. They stopped for a minute, and they flagged us. They told us to pull over, and it’s pouring rain outside. We pulled the vehicle over. We had to get out and go into the facility.

JUAN GONZALEZ: And you were there with Dennis—

AMY GOODMAN: With Dennis Moynihan and with Chuck Scurich. We’re on our Breaking the Sound Barrier tour. And while folks here were eating turkey, we thought we’d go “talk turkey” in Vancouver and talk about the columns in Breaking the Sound Barrier with Canadian listeners to Democracy Now!. Three community radio stations in Vancouver run Democracy Now!

So, we pulled in, went into the border facility. It’s a large hangar-like space. And they start going through our car, but we’re now inside. And then the border patrol call me up to the counter. And the guard—

JUAN GONZALEZ: And obviously, to cross into Canada, people don’t need visas, they just—

AMY GOODMAN: No, that’s right.

JUAN GONZALEZ:—need to show identification.

AMY GOODMAN: You need your passport. And we were very surprised. It was almost empty, this whole hangar, so we were clearly singled out.

And I go up to the counter, and the guard says, “I want your notes.”

I said, “My notes?”

He said, “The notes for the talk tonight.”

I was completely taken aback. I went out to the car, and I brought in the copy of Breaking the Sound Barrier. And I came in, and I said, “Well, this is my new book, and it’s a book of columns. So I actually read from the columns.”

He said, “I want the notes.”

I said, “Well, these you can think of as my notes.”

And he said, “What are you talking about?”

And I said, “Well, I actually start with the last column, which is a column”—as I was saying in this report to Kathy Tomlinson—“about Tommy Douglas.”

Now, for people in the United States, he’s not as famous a name. But in Canada, he’s considered the greatest Canadian. Tommy Douglas is the Premier—was the Premier of Saskatchewan who brought, who pioneered the Canadian national health care system. And, interestingly, he’s the grandfather of the actor Kiefer Sutherland, right? Kiefer Sutherland’s mother is Shirley Douglas, the actress; his father, Donald Sutherland. But his grandfather was Tommy Douglas.

And, so I said, “I’ll be talking about Tommy Douglas.” Actually we were at the Douglas border crossing.

And he said, “What else?”

I said, “What else? Well, global warming.”

“What else?” he said.

I said, “The global economic meltdown.”

“What else?” he said.

I said, “Well, I’ll also be talking about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.”

“What else are you talking about?” he said. And—

JUAN GONZALEZ: Now, is it your sense that this was some rogue customs agent or that he had basically been alerted—

AMY GOODMAN: There with another—

JUAN GONZALEZ:—and had gotten instructions to do this kind of questioning?

This video shows how scientists were misled. They thought the healthy ice was expanding, when it was actually thinning and spreading out over a wider area. I can't wait until all the right wingers who've been triumphantly pushing this as proof there's no climate change acknowledge they were wrong. I'll just sit here and hold my breath:

WINNIPEG–One of Canada's top northern researchers says the permanent Arctic sea ice that is home to the world's polar bears and usually survives the summer has all but disappeared.

Experts around the world believed the ice was recovering because satellite images showed it expanding. But David Barber says the thick, multi-year frozen sheets crucial to the northern ecosystem have been replaced by thin "rotten" ice that can't support weight of the bears. "It caught us all by surprise because we were expecting there to be multi-year sea ice. The whole world thought it was multi-year sea ice," said Barber, who just returned from an expedition to the Beaufort Sea.

"Unfortunately, what we found was that the multi-year (ice) has all but disappeared. What's left is this remnant, rotten ice."

Permanent ice, which is normally up to 10 metres thick, was easily pierced by the research ship, said Barber, who holds the Canada research chair in Arctic science at the University of Manitoba. The team finally reached what it thought was stable ice, only to watch a crack appear just as researchers were preparing to descend onto the floe.

"As I watched, over the course of five minutes, the entire multi-year ice floe broke up into pieces," Barber said. "This floe was 16 km across. Something that's twice the size of Winnipeg, it just broke up right in front of our eyes."

U.S. journalist Amy Goodman said she was stopped at a Canadian border crossing south of Vancouver on Wednesday and questioned for 90 minutes by authorities concerned she was coming to Canada to speak against the Olympics.
Goodman says Canadian Border Services Agency officials ultimately allowed her to enter Canada but returned her passport with a document demanding she leave the country within 48 hours.
Goodman, 52, known for her views opposing the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, told CBC News on Thursday that Canadian border agents asked her repeatedly what subjects she would cover at scheduled speaking engagements in Vancouver and Victoria.

Goodman said she told them she planned to speak about the debate over U.S. health care reform and the wars in Asia.
After much questioning, Goodman said the officials finally asked if she would be speaking about the 2010 Olympics.
"He made it clear by saying, 'What about the Olympics?'" said Goodman. "And I said, 'You mean when President Obama went to Copenhagen to push for the Olympics in Chicago?'"
"He said, 'No. I am talking about the Olympics here in 2010.' I said, 'Oh I hadn't thought of that,'" said Goodman.
"He said, 'You're saying you're not talking about the Olympics?'"
"He was clearly incredulous that I wasn't going to be talking about the Olympics. He didn't believe me," Goodman said.

Goodman said her car was searched and the officials demanded to look at her notes and her computer.

Sarah Palin wants to dismantle Canadian healthcare?

Because she can see it from her house.

From The Canadian Press (syndicated)

Marg Delahunty has braved the wilds of the American Midwest to come face-to-face with Sarah Palin. Comedian Mary Walsh’s beloved character button-holed the former Alaska governor at a recent book-signing in Columbus, Ohio...

"Marg Delahunty" has been compared to the more famous Dame Edna, and Stephen Colbert owes her five bucks, too. Marg is a character, dressed up as some kind of "Canadian Warrior" right winger, etc. Here's a pic of her in full regalia:

I think she's got a Palinesque look to her, but anyhoo...

“We told her we’re from Canada, and we’re just looking for a few words of encouragement for the Canadian conservatives who have worked so tirelessly to destroy the socialized medicare that we have,” Walsh recalled Tuesday from St. John’s.

After being kicked out of the book-signing, Walsh and her crew then waited outside at a loading dock close to where Palin’s bus was parked. When Palin emerged from the Borders bookstore, Walsh said, Delahunty — dressed in a more toned-down version of her trademark warrior princess costume — called out to her.

“Hey, remember us, we’re the Canadians! We came all the way here from Canada!” Delahunty yelled. “When we asked you that question, we didn’t hear your answer.”

Palin strolled over, looking down on Walsh and her crew to tell them that “Canada needs to dismantle its public health-care system and allow private enterprise to get involved and turn a profit.”

“Basically, she said government should stop doing the work that private enterprise should do,” Walsh said.

There are no words, Sarah Palin. No words.

(Aut'chose - It's not as dull up there as we thought)

Another band you've probably never heard of, unless you've spent a bunch of time in the 70's in Quebec. Aut'chose (pronounced "out-shows") were one of the better known exports of Rock Quebecois - although probably in Europe and not so much in the States (the French thing).

Some fan pages have been touting them as the precursor to rap, which is more than a bit of a stretch. Probably a bit more like Serge Gainsbourg with a rock band than L'NWA.

But anyway - they recorded three albums for CBS Canada from 1974-1976. This track Sexe-Fiction is off their second album "Une Nuit comme une Autre". From all indications, they were still gigging around as of 2006.

Not for all tastes - but it's good to expand your horizons every once in a while. And it goes well with Saturday night.

Steven Tyler Falls of the Stage, Gets Hurt

Title: Love In An Elevator
Artist: Aerosmith

It's a good thing Steven Tyler knows a thing or two about love in an elevator, because he won't be taking the stairs any time soon.

Aerosmith's Steven Tyler suffered head, neck and shoulder injuries in a tumble from the stage at a South Dakota show, a concert spokesman said Thursday, and the audience thought it was part of his hip-shaking act until he didn't get up.

Tyler, 61 (Wow!), fell several feet while entertaining the crowd by dancing around as the sound crew replaced a fuse that blew during the song "Love in an Elevator," said Mike Sanborn, spokesman for the Buffalo Chip Campground, which hosted the Wednesday night concert. An amateur video showed him spinning around before falling off the stage.

Unfortunately, Aerosmith had to cancel the rest of its show and their next five dates in Canada. Let's hope that Tyler gets "Back in the Saddle" right quick.

(Eclipse - Progrock from Quebec . . timing wasn't good)

I think, of all the various genres of music in the world, Rock Quebecois of the 1970's is probably the least known. A number of bands came out as part of the Progrock scene and achieved a certain loyal following, while others recorded one of two albums and vanished without a trace.

One of those bands was Eclipse. Almost totally unknown outside of Canada and, specifically Quebec. This French speaking band had all the earmarks of being a success. Great production, good musicians and a major label (CBS). But times being what they were (we're talking 1976 here - the year of The Sex Pistols and the great change in music), could not settle in with an audience and, English being the language of Rock, there was no interest in them from a mainstream point of view.

I've always been amazed at how a lot of European bands were rejected out of hand simply because they didn't sing in English - somehow their work wasn't valid because you couldn't understand what they were saying. I've often felt we missed out on a lot of great music because of that. Our loss.

Anyway - here is Eclipse from their first release in 1976. The track is called "La Derniere Fois". . . and the chords are universal.

CNN's Dana Bash does a report on the Canadian health care system, and as its center piece she features the person Mitch McConnell has been using in his Senate floor speeches as an example of what's wrong with Canadian health care. How many similar stories of people in the United States being denied coverage because they don't have any health insurance at all does anyone think CNN could be doing if they went out and looked?

In fairness, Bash does point out those that disagree with the generalizations about the system, and that the Democrats are not trying to get universal health care here in the United States. That said, seeking out the person McConnell has been citing in his Frank Luntz talking points on health care as the main portion of the segment strikes me as nothing short of Republican propoganda.

As our own Jon Perr has more on McConnell fear mongering about the Canadian health care system:

In his demagoguery regarding President Obama's health insurance proposals featuring a "public option," Senator McConnell trotted out horror stories from Canada and the UK to illustrate "health care denied" by "government-run" systems. But as the New York Times suggested, McConnell's examples of Canadian Shona Holmes and Briton Bruce Hardy in essence made his opponents' case for them:

What Mr. McConnell did not disclose was that Ms. Holmes paid for her treatment, at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona, on her own - an option that is available to patients with financial resources all over the world regardless of their nation's health insurance system...
As for the case of Mr. Hardy, the particulars seem to make it hard to tell how his situation differed from the countless Americans who battle their private insurers every day for access to the newest, most advanced and most expensive treatments.

[....]

Despite Mitch McConnell's grandstanding, Americans' health care is frequently denied - even when they are already paying for it.

And so it goes. Back in 1993, GOP propagandist William Kristol famously mobilized his Republican colleagues, warning that Bill Clinton' success with health reform could lead to a Democratic majority for a generation. His talking point then was "no crisis." 16 years later, Mitch McConnell is frightening Americans with dark visions of a future system where health care is denied, delayed and rationed.

The future is now.

C&L's Late Nite Music Club: The World's Greatest Beatboxer?

Artist: Julia Dales

This, via All Songs Considered, is downright virtuosic.

Who's the greatest beatboxer in the world? We'll soon find out, when the annual Beatbox Battle World Championship gets underway in Berlin, Germany on May 28. Each year contestants from all over the world flock to the city to lay down some sweet, human-generated beats in hopes of snagging the grand prize. This year's winner will be crowned on May 31.

In the meantime, the BBWC has announced the winner of its wildcard competition. It's Julia Dales, a 17 year-old from Canada.

I can't possibly imagine that anyone can possibly do a better job than this, unless she chokes in front of a crowd and can only make the magic happen in the backseat of a car with a deadpan gaze. This crushes every second of the American Idol finale!
