Late Night Music Club with The Who

Title: Pinball Wizard
Artist: The Who

OMG! Tommy turned 40-years old in May and we forgot to say it then, so: Happy (belated) Birthday, Tommy!

And at Newstalgia tonight listeners can take their pick... Ravel's Quartet in F, or The Rolling Stones from 1971. Enjoy.

Here's a playlist that includes the entire original studio album sequentially.

Saw two shows from this tour. Columbus Ohio and four days later, Athens, Ohio. At Ohio U they played in a huge quonset-hut shaped multi-purpose building. Looked like a can on it's side, half-buried. Well, that's not how Pete saw it, "First time we ever played in a bloody inverted garbage can." My friends and myself laughed like Hell until we realized we were the only ones laughing. The locals didn't think it was funny, but the ensuing show was so brilliant, I'm sure that joke was quickly forgotten.

What a great band.

I've been listening to Ravel's Quartet in F over at Newstalgia. It's an amazing recording, considering it's 80 years old!

Thanks, Andy :)

I really like this song and video:

IIRC, I first heard that here. I think John or Howie featured it here when it was released. McCartney's still got a few good songs left in him, I think.

Gotta love a song with the line:

...At each end of my life is an open door

I just finished watching the concert for the rock & roll hall of fame. Amazing.

Part of the show was anchored by Crosby Still and Nash. Great stuff.

Here's CSN backed by Crooks and Liars' own Mike Finnegan. Recorded at the Fillmore on 9/18/97. Sorry but its only most of the second set, but it sounds great.

but I'm getting a Dire Straits link ... Dang!

Sorry. The Dire Straits is pretty good as well.

Thanks, fossilhippie! I love that song.

ps, I agree about Dire Straits!

gna ;)

I was (am) a huge Who fan, but Ray Davies and The Kinks have won me over as the ultimate in original British invasions song writers. I think the last decent Who album was Who By Numbers. I love Live at Leeds, the expanded double album. Just incredible.

15+ years ago where the interviewer asked Pete about his songwriting abilities. Pete said, humbly, that he really thought his songwriting capabilities were far inferior to those of Ray Davies.

I liked Townshend even more from that day forward.

I'm a big fan of both the Kinks and the Who so I can relate to that dilema. I wouldn't say one was better than the other though. Both are great.

His show was the next to last night of his 30 gig "Use It or Lose It Tour".

He only drew 3000, in a 5200 seat indoor arena. I was shocked and felt bad for him. We had a good time but I'd have to say it was "Good but not great." He had chest congestion and made a huge deal of it hocking luggies onstage; he told stories and goofed around in between every song which became annoying. The one thing that floored me was, there was no consistency to his song list. He didn't do one song from Tommy or Quadraphenia and did a medley of Johnny Cash songs which was where he totally lost the audience! (I was wondering if Townsend doesn't allow him to play a lot of material. Thoughts?)

The best song of the evening by far was "Going Mobile" sung and played by Simon Townsend, Pete's brother. If you closed your eyes you'd swear it was Pete.

You can never go home again.

But Daltrey in SoFla? Damn, if I'd been back in Miami, I'd have gone--SoFla is nowadays a wasteland when it comes to rock bands performing.
