C&L's Late Night Music Club - RIP Bea Arthur

Title: Hey Look Me Over
Artist: Bea Arthur

Bea Arthur passed away earlier today. Fans of Maude and The Golden Girls might not be aware that she was a long-time Broadway star with a great set of pipes. Here she is on the PBS special "Broadway Plays Washington on Kennedy Center Tonight," originally broadcast March 13, 1982

i have a friend who was for years a comedy writer in LA. he said he never wrote with and for anybody better than Bea Arthur. she was funny.

One of the greats and one of the funniest.

Unsurprisingly I already had to report a right-wing troll on her imdb site, for saying ugly shit.

I don't know how, why or when I got hooked, but I'm hooked on reruns of Golden Girls. And Dorothy was my favorite character.

She was a talented performer and will be missed.

a very talented lady, and extremely funny. She was a sort of a minor hero to women back in the 70's for her portrayal of Maude - a very gutsy broad.

My favorite Bea Arthur recording is with Angela Lansbury, singing
"Bosom Buddies." My college friends and I used to sing it at the top of our lungs.

I enjoyed her Maude character especially her appearances on All in the family. It's sad that she's gone.

That's where the Maude character was introduced.

That was part of the problem with the TV show Maude

They didn't really have anything comparable to the strong opposition of Carroll O'Conner's Archie Bunker, practically pleading for a slap-down.

She was truly a powerhouse of talent.

I grew up watching Maude. How I loved that show!

Bea Arthur will never be forgotten.

...and so very sad she's gone. But, she left a great body of work. The abortion episodes of 'Maude' are cultural touchstones. 'The Golden Girls' was just pure fun. Bea was one of a kind...

I always got a kick out of her characters, she was great as Maude but she was even better as the woman at the unemployment window in ancient Roam http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IF2RYhNhBdw

ain't u glad she showed up; and when the country was falling apart, betsy ross got it all sewed up--and then there's maude--the old uncompromisin' enterprisin' anthing but tranquilizing--right on maude. RIP

I would like to thank Norman Lear for finally talking Bea into going on “All in the family” as that spun-off Maude.

So sad, RIP Bea. I'm just thinking, No matter what the issues of the day were, Bea's character "Maude" always stood by the side of social justice. Be it, women's rights, gay rights or civil rights. She used to put Archie Bunker in his place. Maude seemed to have challenged society's bigotry and prejudice of the day and in her own way woke up the conscience of a nation. Thank you Norman Lear for giving Bea her role as Maude. I think Bea would want all of us to continue to be champions for social justice.

her death takes another well-loved great comedy lady from the stage. We won't see her like again.

Maude, Vera and Dorothy were her best roles but her guest spots in History of the World, Malcolm in the Middle, Futurama, etc., were equally fun. Bea always made an memorable guest appearance.

Who knew she was such a Broadway Diva? Her voice was like a foghorn but she sang so bittersweetly that it always connected with the audience.

To tax your trivia knowledge, I guess she was our Marie Dressler, a beloved bygone stage and screen star from the 30's who wasn't a likely movie star but like Bea had endless charm and comedic talent.

I think people liked seeing that hilarious, tall, clunky, raspy ole gal soar. I know I did.

dear frog,

long have i been subject to your ridiculous, rambling rants & lame one-liners. you are utterly annoying, to say the least.

however, i do have a soft spot in my otherwise blackened heart for you.

it is in this spirit i dedicate steve miller's "the joker" to you this fine evening.

They sent us home to watch the show comin’ on the little screen;
A man named ike was in the white house, big black limousine;
There were many shows to follow, from ’hooter’ to ’doodyville’,
Though I saw them all, I can’t recall which cartoon was real.

The coon-skin caps, yankee bats, the "hound dog" man’s big start;
The a-bomb fears, Annette had ears, I lusted in my heart.
A young man from Boston set sail the new frontier,
And we watched the dream dead-end in Dallas,
They buried innocence that year.

I know it’s true, oh so true, ’cause I saw it on tv.

We gathered round to hear the sound comin’ on the little screen,
The grief had passed, the old men laughed, and all the girls screamed
’cause four guys from England took us all by the hand,
It was time to laugh, time to sing, time to join the band.

But all too soon, we hit the moon, and covered up the sky;
They built their bombs, and aimed their guns, and still I don’t know why
The dominoes tumbled and big business roared;
Every night at six, they showed the pictures and counted up the score.

I know it’s true, oh so true, ’cause I saw it on tv.

The old man rocks among his dreams, a prisoner of the porch;
"the light," he says "at the end of the tunnel,
Was nothin’ but a burglar’s torch."
And them that was caught in the cover are all rich and free,
But they chained my mind to an endless tomb
When they took my only son from me.

I know it’s true, oh so true, ’cause I saw it on tv.
I know it’s true, oh so true, ’cause I saw it on tv.

R.I.P. Bea. THX.

She could get pretty crude with the best of them.

Thanks, Acting Patriotic!

Aimee Mann - Wise Up

I'm certain most people feel this way at some point.

It is beautiful because the catalyst of change and a very strong catharsis is right around the corner. If we choose to take that opportunity.

Aimee Mann - Save Me

And I am done posting here is well.

Peace.

Bea Arthur.

Hej,hej.

for those lovely songs.

I'll miss the woman, though it's been only re-runs in the last few years where I've seen her acting. I did see her on Broadway in Mame with Angela Lansbury more years ago than I want to remember.

RIP, Dorothy. Now you don't have to worry about Stanley's unfortunate attentions anymore.

)O(

I think she also played Vera Miles opposite Lucille Ball in the movie Auntie Mame.

But I always prefered the 50's movie version.

I've also read the books.

I always thought it be so easy to adapt into a TV series.

along with her costar Rue McClanahan. She will sorely be missed there, too.

)O(

Bea was the best and those were the days.

God will get you for this.

Sincerely,

Maude

Sad

Someday we will all die from cancer. RIP in peace Bea. Back to the stars with you.

I loved her in Futurama's 'Death By Snoo Snoo'. RIP, Fembot
