C&L's Late Night Music Club with Thomas Dolby

Title: She Blinded Me With Science
Artist: Thomas Dolby

Poor Andy K!

Our webmaster Jamie sent the Crooks and Liars team a terrific link to a guy who re-configured his circa 1982 Commodore 64 computer so he could run Twitter from it. I said I could see running the youtube as an open thread -- dang, it's got five and a quarter inch discs in the video! -- if only I could mash it with Thomas Dolby's "She Blinded Me With Science."

Andy swore that song would stick in his brain for the rest of the day. Good heavens!

OM F'ing gawd!
I haven't seen that since forever! I remember when it first hit MTV! It blew me away!
And that wonderful Prophet analog synth..... whoa!

PreFab Sprout's album 'Two Wheels Good' (named 'Steve McQueen' in the UK) is one of the greatest albums of ever!

Absolutley - and I have a not widely sold Thomas Dolby CD that is all done on vintage synths too - trying to remember the name of it. One of the pieces is called NEO (Near Earth Orbit) its very cool.

Thomas Dolby remains on the cutting edge, like Mark Mothersbaugh - you don't hear alot about them in the mainstream but they continue to musically innovate.

Cool video, great song!

Here's what I wrote:

"DAMMIT, [BLUEGAL]! That song is going to be in my head for a week, now."
(emphasis added)

And it will! :P

Thomas Dolby

Hyperactive

Wow

Dolby's vids are so entertaining to watch. This song is a fave o' mine.

Thank you, Andy!

:D

But if it wasn't for bluegal, I never would have come up with that one.

Sure beat cassette tapes. ♥ Thanks for the flashback!

I'd like to use a play on words here and say...
Thanks (Big bluegal). See: IBM

Though, I'll play it safe and simply say thanks [bluegal]!

What a difference a day makes... evolution

Oh don't get me started!
How bout..... paper DEC tape used to boot up a PDP 11/02!!
I was blinded by .... The Science!!

As for the song, as a long time Dolby fan, it's not my favorite. I prefer his techno and soundtrack work to "The Golden Age of Wireless". But my favorite album of his was without a doubt, "The Flat Earth" with its Jazz and Funk stylings and political overtones.

Speaking of technology and Thomas Dolby, he's the guy who wrote the Beatnik software that puts MP3 ringtones on all the cellphones around the world. He sure as hell has made a mark.

That is some strange stuff man, although I really loved my c64. My grandfather overclocked mine, the heat sink was so funny just a metal tab.

Sparked my interest tho,a GUI. I had a modem hooked up to my c64...couldn't find the internet tho, lol. 1987-88 maybe earlier.

Had a small sample of ZZ-top on the c64, it took forever to load off the 5n1/4 floppy drive only played for about 10 seconds, sounded perfect.

Great PC, too bad the monocrome 2000 dollar ibm's took over.

Sprites???
:)

old enough to remember Magnus Pyke's science show Don't Ask Me? I thought it was so cool that Dolby put him in this video.

If he was, it was either before my time or not carried in my neck of the woods. I recall Mr. Wizard, and my old favorite Phineas J. Whoopee- from Tennessee Tuxedo- in my childhood, though.

House Of The King

Sound familiar, Peter?

And it did sound like Tull. Still these guys were excellent musicians in their own right. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N2RNe2jwHE0

That was an extravaganza of musical talent. Yummy!

Domo Arigato, Mr. Roboto!! :-)

This one is for John.
Andrea Boccelli.
Canto Della Terra

good night.

My heartfelt condolences to John and his family. You are in our thoughts tonight.

This musical marathon down Memory Lane was a lot of fun. I downloaded the Dolby album with Blinded on it. It was the song One of our Submarines that I had to have. Someone actually misplaced one of our submarines last year and I had to find it.
Wind Power was fun too; we used to sail our Sailboards very fast. I used to hear that song in my head all the time.

His other songs never got much airplay in the US, unfortunately.

to get away from the pain and horror of the current madness, and just think about this wonderful old (how can that be?) music.

I'm thinking about doing a very retro CD using nothing but my vintage (the real deal - not a synth plugin) Yamaha DX-7 - a synth that is timeless, and built so strong (very little plastic) that its gonna outlive me! The DX-7 was a favorite of folks like Elton John, Thomas Dolby, Motherbaugh, and many many others. I think doing a retro CD would be alot of fun, writing and performing all the songs in in the style of the 80's
