Late Night Music Club with U2

Title: Vertigo

Five years ago today I started my own humble little blog, and that same month U2 released the album, "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb."

They've had considerably more traffic than I.

between Achtung, Baby! and The Joshua Tree. To me, that is U2. I love most of their singles, as well.

...I was introduced to such bands like U2 thanks to stations such as 91X here in San Diego, and KROQ up the freeway in Los Angeles which both took the lead in introducing a badly needed alternative sound from alternative bands at the time. Before 91X adopted that format, there were no stations, NONE, here in San Diego playing the likes of Roxy Music, Echo and the Bunnymen, Spandau Ballet, The Clash, Soft Cell, OMD,Sparks, The Stranglers, Heaven 17, Translator, book of Love, Duran Duran, Depeche Mode, Real Life, Maurice and the Cliches, The B-52s, Alphaville, Oingo Boingo, and on and on and on. Many of those bands are household names today in spite of how few stations at the time (about 12 IIRC) across the country had such a format (MTV helped a bit too I must add). ...That music literally -- LITERALLY -- saved my life given the horrible break-up withdrawal pangs I was going through at the time. I woke up everyday looking forward to a new sound from a new band and that anticipation kept me distracted and kept me going.

While I prefer earlier U2, this is a good single. And it seems like many other sites I visit, from plants to politics, are slow. Everything is contracting, it seems. Hang in there...

U2 was my first favorite band. I heard their new song on the radio when I was 14, and asked my mom who this "new, hit band" was. She was surprised, and said "U2...but they're not new, they're as old as I am."

Years later, I still love U2, from every generation. There's a reason these guys can still fill stadiums full of people, and put on a rocking good show.

Are y'all as tired of U2 as I am?

Bono is looking more and more like Popeye.

With all the crap that's out there, I'm glad that there's a band like U2, and I'm glad that they've been around for as long as they have. I've found that lately it's become hipster cool to hate U2, although a good reason has never been given.

I think the reason that U2 has been around for 30 plus years is because, while they've experimented with different styles and ideas -- some of which were huge successes (The Joshua Tree) and some less so (POP), they've always stayed true to their values and beliefs.

What I find most unique and interesting about them is that most of their songs have different layers of meaning. Their songs can be simultaneously about a personal relationship or a spiritual longing. That clearly resonates with a lot of people--myself included, and I think that's a good thing.

Also, happy anniversary, Bluegal!

And I love Bono's charity work, but when I watch him perform, particularly his banter and ministrations, I feel embarassed for him, in an odd way I don't feel about any other artist. He is simultaneously both the coolest and lamest person alive.

.

Yep. These tired old farts need to shut up, go away and enjoy their millions. Except for Bono who actually has a promising career in various humanitarian causes.

Generally speaking I don't trust anyone making over 150K a year.

I still remember when Bono was telling typical boston americans ........ (the kind who claim they are Irish because of some distant relative being from there, and they themselves have never been, thoug claim they are more Irish than the Irish) ........ that supporting the IRA (the US being the biggest finical contributor at the time) was wrong because it's terrorism ......

Was booed and jeered at on stage by "real americans" .......

Sad day that was, and it's only gotten much worse from there.

So glad the US is in decline ! Just have to speed it up now.
