C&L's Late Night Music Club With The Temptations

Title: I Wish It Would Rain

It's been raining all day here in Nashville, and this song has been running through my head since getting drenched on my early morning trail run. One would be hard pressed to find a vocal performance as emotive as David Ruffin's on the song I Wish It Would Rain, the title track on The Temptations' 1967 Motown album. Lyricist Roger Penzabene penned the words after finding out that his wife was cheating on him and he tragically committed suicide a week after the single was released. Backed by a subdued rhythm track (courtesy of The Funk Brothers), Ruffin sings as if Penzabene's heartbreak and loneliness are his own, ultimately delivering one of the most melancholic songs of the Temptations repertoire. Ruffin sings that a "man ain't supposed to cry". Listen and try not to.

Sweet memories.

Beautiful. A longtime favorite of mine.

And living in the Midwest my entire 50 years I appreciate the benefits of rain.

For cleansing, for the trees, and for all of the other stuff.

is one of my all-time favorite albums. I have a cassette tape with it on one side and Sisters of Mercy's Vision Thing on the other side. Both go great with methamphetamines.

Hey, Jared, welcome to C and L, and hope to catch you in person around Music City some time. Great song and a great call for this day. I'm in Nashville, listening still to local TV channels for flood and tornado warnings. I've been here 21 years and have never seen anything like this. The scene of a flooded I-24 is surreal and horrifying. Many cars were in gridlock due to flooded areas ahead of them, then the water rose around them before they could get out of harm's way. I bailed on a planned night out to hear a great local Beatles' cover band, choosing to stay home and pay attention to the turbulent weather so I can protect my home and dogs and guitars, and help my neighbors if needed. Hoping for safety and some relief for those being most impacted by this weather anomaly, second highest day of rain ever recorded in Nashville, and likely to be the highest by the time midnight arrives. Heavy rains have started again after a brief respite, and plenty of major storm and tornado warnings still from Memphis eastward across all of mid and southern TN. The heartbreak in this song is a perfect fit, thanks again for such a good choice.

I was in a new band and we were casting around for new songs we might do.

Sudden brainstorm--I start the piano intro for "I Wish It Would Rain." The reaction of the other musicians was immediate and visceral.

"No, man!"

"Stop it!"

"Not that one!"

Any man who's had his heart broken is vulnerable to this song. Thanks for putting it up.

Speak for yourself mate!

I was born in 1960 so, I grew up on this music. David Ruffin was my favorite of the lead singers. Sadly, his life was tragic and ended way too soon. This song is one of his strongest. Whenever I heard this song, I always became a little sad and meloncholy. And if it was actually raining, I ususally did start crying. I had no idea that the songwriter committed suicide. When I hear this song now, it will evoke a whole new sense of sadness. Wow!

My mom told me years ago that there were rumors at the time that, Tammi's brain tumor was actually caused by David Ruffin who had hit her in the head with the back end of a gun. He'd become jealous of her being teamed with Marvin Gaye and had beat her repeteadly. Tammi was only 24 years old when she died in 1970. I just read the following on a website.

"Disaster then struck when Tammi collapsed in Marvin's arms during a homecoming performance at the Virginia's Hampton-Syndey College in 1967.

She was diagnosed as suffering from a brain tumor resulting from a contusion.

The first real clue to Tammi's headaches was provided by her personal dentist, Dr. Herbert Rose, who noticed as she sat in his chair to have a tooth filled that one entire side of her face was sagging, the doctor called her mother and she taken to hospital.

Tammi underwent eight operations in total, all of which were paid for by Berry Gordy Jr.

Her family witnessed her becoming a shadow of her former self, physically." Then, this - "Her death has been the subject of much speculation, centred on rumours that her brain disorders were triggered by alleged beatings administered by a member of a major Motown group.

These (alleged) accusations were given voice in 'Number One With A Bullet', a novel by former Marvin Gaye aide Elaine Jesmer, which included a character (allegedly) based upon Tammi Terrell."

My mom apparently, was right! Very sad.
