C&L's Late Night Music Club With 2010 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Inductees
The 2010 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees have been announced:
Today, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation announced ABBA, Genesis, Jimmy Cliff, The Hollies and The Stooges as its 2010 artist inductees. Also being inducted this year as individual recipients of the Ahmet Ertegun Award will be David Geffen and songwriters Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil, Elle Greenwich, Jeff Barry, Jesse Stone, Mort Shuman and Otis Blackwell. Read on...
I chose to post videos of both Genesis (with Peter Gabriel) and The Stooges, (RIP Ron Asheton) and I'm curious to know our reader's thoughts on this year's inductees -- and your thoughts on artists you think should have made the cut.

Most enjoyable!
The Hollies - On a Carousel
me-oww!
They are so young! Great video, miss_kitty.
... and should have been inducted the same time The Beatles, Kinks, Stones and Who were.
Thanks for the vid, m_k; as an added note, The Hollies did most of their recording - at least in their earlier days - at Abbey Road, so the studio we see here just may be that. I'm pretty sure that "Carousel" was from late April and May of 1967. Right afterwards came "Carrie Ann". treestump was in high school then and remembers them both sounding wonderful on an AM car radio.
My favorite of theirs is 1965's "I'm Alive" and second fave is "Look Through Any Window".
Theirs is a well deserved induction. Congratulations to all of them - and a particular shout-out to their original bassist, Eric Haydock.
Nice to see some prog rock getting some respect from the Hall of Fame. They've been very biased against the entire genre for quite some time.
It's a little ridiculous for Genesis to get into the RRHF when Yes, King Crimson, and Rush are still not in.
and I think Yes was out at the same time but King Crimson and Rush came later
...he uses big words like 'particularly' and 'delicatessen.' -- Jack
King Crimson started in '69.
What the hell is Rush doing in that sentence? Prog-rock for 11 year olds.
Rush started in 1974, meaning they were eligible to enter the HOF in 1999. King Crimson, Yes, & Rush should ALL be in there by now. I'm happy to see Genesis getting in, maybe it means the rest will soon follow.
Genesis was 1967 Yes was 1968 as was Rush and King Crimson was 1969
...he uses big words like 'particularly' and 'delicatessen.' -- Jack
about Yes and King Crimson. Unfortunately, Dave Marsh, who I consider a fine rock critic otherwise, really hates prog rock. Sees it as too effete and contrary to the blues and gospel roots of the music. I think he's wrong in a major way when it comes to Yes and Crimson. Both groups have composed and performed some of the most beautiful music in rock.
Rush's first album was '74 rather.
like prog rock or not, RUSH has defined the rock landscape worldwide.
Its ridiculous that they continue to be unrecognized when METALLICA is in there ... *shame*
Along with the Velvet Underground and MC5, they took music places it had never been before. 'Dirt' is one of their best. Thx for the post.
Ann
Still my favorite off of the first album. I don't know if it's Rock Action's sledgehammer-simple drumming or Ron Ashton's complete wahhed-out meltdown at the end, but this song always does it for me.
Don't try to confuse the issue with half-truths and gorilla dust.
I Wanna Be Your Dog
For miss_kitty

If the Rock and Roll hall of fame is destined to induct Nickelback 20 years from now, we should stop paying attention to their selections now.
to see that The Hollies were finally inducted...much deserved. Genesis I would have thought should have been included much earlier!
Abba...never a doubt...they were just too 'catchy' & spawned lots of dollars later with tracks for fun musicals & bad movies.
As for the comments about Rush...not my cup of tea...but I would never, ever discount their talent, ingenuity, depth & total lack of pretentiousness. I always maintained that they are a 'guy band'...most Rush fans I've known over the years are guys, including my hubby...no idea why...just is.
Thanks for the Genesis clip...not only a great song, but Peter Gabriel was just 'delicious looking' back when he was so young. :p
ABBA gets the nod to go into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and KISS gets left standing at the doorstep?? Hmmmm....
The R&R HOF is clearly still the joke that I've always thought it was.
Just wondering.
You can probably draw a straighter line between Rocket 88 and Waterloo than you can between the former and The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway.
Don't try to confuse the issue with half-truths and gorilla dust.
The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway was one of the most innovative works of that time period. Kiss? Three chord power rock.
Hasa Diga Eebowai
It's a beautiful piece of work. Not my favorite though.
In my opinion, Close To The Edge is still the crowning achievement of Prog rock.
And KISS has stayed with that formula for the most part. Genesis "Lamb" vs "Illegal Alien" and "Invisible Touch?"
I've seen some stuff, man. And some thangs...
Some of the voters, like the folks from "Rolling Stone," hated KISS from day one and predicted their quick demise while proclaiming the greatness of artists like Patty Smith. Of course KISS went on to be mega-stars and still are a very successful rock band.
I've seen some stuff, man. And some thangs...
These guys should have been inducted into the RnR Hall of Fame long ago:
Humble Pie: I don't need no doctor
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lxyRjzXvxo
"Rockin' The Fillmore" - one of the greatest, hardest rockin' albums ever (and features Peter Frampton's best guitar work evah!)
Triva question for all you late night music club fans out there: What r&b duo wrote this song?
If you have selfish, ignorant citizens, you're gonna get selfish, ignorant leaders.
George Carlin
...and now that I've looked it up, I'm just a bit surprised. They must have been very young at the time!
And, no, I'm not going to give it away. That would violate the honor code.
On edit: Okay, one of them was 20, the other 24. Just i bit older than i assumed.
Don't try to confuse the issue with half-truths and gorilla dust.
Q: What is WRONG with these RRHOF people? (A: They're clueless.)
"Trust no one, Mr. Mulder." - Well-Manicured Man
Oh, how I lament the fact that my 3 canadian heroes or so badly maligned. Whatever
Even if you don't find Rush to be to your taste, their influence on music has arguably been greater than Genesis, Yes and Crimson combined. I don't mean to offend by saying that, for I consider myself an aficionado of all things Yes and Genesis, but Rush is much more likely to be mentioned as an influence.
Also, I believe the RRHF determines eligibility based upon first released recording. That would probably put Crimson first, Yes second, Genesis third, and Rush fourth. "In The Court Of The Crimson King", by King Crimson is widely considered to be the first recording of prog rock.
just about getting crushed to death at one of their concerts I have nothing against them. A perfectly respectable three chord power rock band. Just like Kiss. Nothing exceptional though. I'm sure they'll get in eventually.
Hasa Diga Eebowai
Your post proves the subjective nature of listening to music. Where you hear a "three chord power rock band", I hear a band that is much more. Perhaps it is because I have listened to their whole catalog.
While there are three-chord tunes in there, the highlights of the catalog are great pieces like Xanadu, Hemispheres, Natural Science, Camera Eye, La Villa Strangiato, etc. Bands like Kiss have never even come close, nor have they aspired to do so.
I am Canadian, and I have to admit that Rush gets way too much credit for being Rock and Roll hall of fame worthy.
Before admitting Rush, you'd have to admit better progressive rock bands as mentioned before.
Genesis is a good choice because of both their longevity and their creativity. If you listen to Nursery Cryme right up to wind and wuthering, it's hard to argue against that induction. Not to mention, they completely re-invented themselves on 2 separate occasions to remain relevant in the music scene.
With Rush, you have 3 virtuosos that play amazingly tight but just never put up the same body of work. Also, they had maybe a 5-7 year run but after that they made horrendous music (rap solo in Roll the bones anyone?) Longevity, longevity.
I would have accepted putting Kim Crimson or YES in before Genesis. They are all excellent.
I would agree that Crimson and Yes should be inducted into the RRHF before Rush, but Rush should definitely be in there. They have been a consistent in hard rock for 35 years.
There are definitely areas which they explored which I didn't care for (Test For Echo and Vapor Trails), but they've stayed true to their own artistic vision. I would additionally say that the rap in roll the bones was intended to be a humorous jab at the tastes of the day. If you don't find it funny, so be it, but let's not pretend that Rush ever intended to become a rap group.
YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING......ABBA? THEY are NETHER ROCK OR ROLL!!!!!!!
With picks like that .....it goes a long way towards understanding whats wrong in the world today!!!! RECTAL tastebuds!!!
What was Peter Gabriel then, about 12 years old? That vid is the epitome of earliest progressive rock. I can't believe it's taken this long for Genesis to make the Hall. ah well, better late than never.
Thanks for posting the Stooges too. Never got to see them while Ashton was still alive...
...the rest of the choices rock. I was a huge fan of Genesis, and I talked a friend into going to see them at an awful velo-drome in Antwerp in May, 1975. Every note echoed a thousand times off of all the wood in the hall; it was maybe the worst show ever. Genesis broke up just a few weeks later.
My friend never forgave me. His choice that night was to see Jack Bruce, Carla Bley, and Mick Taylor in a short-lived incarnation. Hindsight's a killer.
The Hollies, Stooges...great choices. Can someone peel Iggy from the ceiling?
was The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. These guys were great!
Kingdom Tower
Wow, Phil had hair once upon a time. Does anyone remember Phil's experimental band "Brand X" ?
I have to second Dread.Weasel's amazement at seeing Phil Collins with hair. Wow. And overalls. I'm very glad that Genesis is getting some recognition by the RRHofF -- anyone thinking reunion?
And Rush is not simply a "three-chord power rock" band. They may love Ayn Rand and have a singer that sounds like Donald Duck on helium, but they're very solid musicians. And Neil Peart has my vote for greatest RnR drummer of all time.
