...from newbies: CRASH KINGS

performing "All Along," "14 Arms," "It's Only Wednesday," "Raincoat," and "You Got Me" live at Emo's in Austin, Texas.

These guys are gonna be huge. "All Along" isn't even released and it's an instant classic rock anthem.

Brings me back to high school jazz band, days of improvisation, jazz LPs, the good life.

How about Lila's Dance by Mahavishnu Orchestra?

Ys!

But some of us laugh out loud.

Herbie Hancock is an amazing musician. Thanks for the treat!

My daughter is a DJ at her college radio station. She did an hour of nothing but versions of Cantaloupe Island, half of which were by Herbie, of course since he wrote it. She didn't even have this one. Very nice.

I still prefer the funky version with Freddie Hubbard.

Right now I am listening to Wes Montgomery, Talkin`. Bumping On Sunset is the best known on it.

littlepitcher's picture

Pwned it.

Raining so hard I can't hear anything else. I'd be listening to Hubbard's Pensativa if I could hear.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY miss_kitty, FROM THE EASTERN TIME ZONE!!

Didn't you tell me you saw these guys in their heyday?

that was a huge hit when In was in school!

Hope this racy, modern stuff doesn't offend, m_k.

The Yankee Doodle Boy

Few of you may know this, but miss_kitty's parents met when they were extras in George M. Cohan's original Broadway production of Little Johnny Jones, nor are you probably aware that m_k herself was Mickey Rooney's stunt double in the Andy Hardy series. Those is facts!

Size Stupid don't fit ya.

miss_kitty is a sharp one. She was the bagman in the Black Sox scandal. She was the mysterious young lady in the company of President Warren G. Harding at the time of his death. She stowed away on The Spirit of St. Louis for Lindbergh's so-called historic solo transatlantic flight. Deny this as much as she will, THOSE IS FACTS!

a real Broadway family? Wow. When I lived in NY I never went to Broadway, it wasn't until I left I realized what I was missing and went back for a show - and I'd love to go back for more given the chance.

Rich H's picture

I'm a little slow to catch on I guess.

I love Eddie Cantor. That voice, those eyes!

ps, your banter tonight with miss_kitty is delightfully amusing ;)

...that if it wasn't for a scandalous, drunken evening that a young miss_kitty spent in a San Francisco hotel room in the company of Theda Bara, Charles Chaplin and both John and Lionel Barrymore, there would have been no Prohibition!

Also, miss_kitty built the Algonquin Roundtable- she's a skilled carpenter!

Those, again, IS FACTS!

miss_kitty's picture

Jealous 'cause the Arbuckle/Rappe scandal knocked you outta Hollywood Babylon, huh?

calgarylady's picture

My suspicions have been confirmed.

miss_kitty has always been quite a whippersnapper!

This recording of Sophie was from 1911. Next up on YouTube was a clip of her on "What's My Line", the TV show, from 1957. At first, I thought that couldn't be. Then, it occurred to me that it was no more anachronistic than if Mick Jagger were to appear on a quiz show today. Time flies, eh?

miss_kitty's picture

I actually remember seeing Sophie Tucker on teevee.

I used to have a huge collection of old 78's, from the late 1890's through the late 40's. The oldest I remember was Bromhilde (who I'd have to look up - very popular though, had many of those), to Jimmy Durante, The Andrews Sisters, Tommy Dorsey, Frank Sinatra, Crosby, and Garland (yes, I had Somewhere Over the Rainbow).

The real intersting thing was apparently they didn't have the technology to record on both sides in the beginning. So the B side would just be an etching, a seascape or landscape or something - and they did come out in varying colors, a red, blue or green disk, they didn't have to be black.

But, I lost them all in a fire. Oh, well.
