C&L's Late Night Music Club with Sonic Youth

Title: Sacred Trickster

Sonic Youth's new album The Eternal, their sixteenth, came out yesterday. Here's the leadoff track, "Sacred Trickster", from Later... With Jools Holland last month.

Sonic Youth were one of the very first of the indie bands of the 1980s to jump to a major label. DGC signed the band hoping that they would act as a magnet for more credible acts to the label; they attracted a small band from Seattle called Nirvana shortly after. The Eternal marks Sonic Youth's return to the indies -- it's out on the hugely successful Matador Records.

Sonic Youth cite The Gordons as a major early influence of their sound.

Never have I been in a more intense pitt then at any Sonic Youth show, I've seen them all over so.Cal indoor and outdoor events and they kicked ass every time.

I've been waiting for this one, I don't see how they they can top their last album. I nominate Thurston Moore for greatest living American.

They were the first "band" I ever liked. Being a techno geek in my early teens I never gave rock much of a listen. Then I heard Sonic Youth and was blown away.

Still amazing after all these decades.

three amazing albums, back to back to back

in the late 80's all of us punks shoving around the useless wooden toys listened to Slayer and/or gangster rap when we were in public and showing off. but Sonic Youth, Fugazi, and the Descendents were what we listened to when we were at home and wanted to listen to something intelligent.

my favorite Sonic Youth song right here:

I remember seeing Sonic Youth the first time around 91, maybe 92 (90 even? Stupid dumb LSD and it's long term effects!) They were on the ticket with the headliner, Neil Young, and Social Distortion. I'd heard the album 'Goo,' but didn't realize how great a band they were until this live concert -- friggin' fantastic!

How much of the stuff did you do? I did it all through high school, and (you'll have to take my word for it) I'm fine. It was the 70s; maybe it was better stuff?

I'm seeing them next month at the Electric Factory in Philly. My third time in about 4 years of going to one of their concerts. I try to never miss them when they're in town.

in the age of American Idol and other crap.
also, the fact we can't get the Jools Holland Show on BBC America is a serious bummer.

mahalo nui max! thought the last cool album of an 80s band that i would hear was bloodflowers. it's strange watching the beloved kim gordon still putting it out like she's still in her 20s. i used to think that the only real rock bands left the scene while they were still young (as did jane's addiction) but during these vacuous times, i'll reconsider.
