Title: Gimme Some Money

Have you given to C&L's Donation Drive? Here's a friendly reminder from David, Nigel, Derek and Ed Begley Jr., guesting on the drums.

DonationsTracker.com - Make a Donation to Donation

I've been racking my brain to see if I could come up with a Donation Drive playlist of the top 5 songs asking for financial assistance. It wasn't easy:

1. Spinal Tap - Gimme Some Money

2. Barrett Strong - Money (That's What I Want)

3. Bing Crosby - Brother, Can You Spare a Dime

4. Destiny's Child - Bills

5. Tommy James and the Shondells - Mony Mony (This one's a stretch.)

Honorable mention: The Network (Green Day's alter ego) - Spike

What else?

I always thought the lead singer on this sounded like the Queen.

Of the version by The Avengers, my favorite one.

Wasn't "Lenny" from "LaVerne and Shirley" in this group? I saw pictures of the group, thought I saw Lenny, but then when they named them, his name wasn't there. (No, not "Lenny" but his real name, which I think was David, but the last name was different.)

Is this true, or is what I remember some sort of bizarre dream?

Michael McKean (Lenny from Lavern & Shirly) Christopher Guest and Harry Shearer. They're a heavy metal parody group.

Blue Lensman's picture

If by "parody" you mean "best rock & roll band ever" then I totally agree!! This goes out to Bill O'LIElly.

Andy K's picture
Yes

But FilthyHarry pointed that out.

What he didn't point out, however, is that before L&S, McKean and David L. Lander (Squiggy) were, with Shearer, in The Credibility Gap, a comedy outfit that began on the radio in LA and put out a few really funny albums; and that Guest was a member of Lenny and The Sqiggtones, Lenny's and Squiggy's band on L&S.

to be unaware of Spinal Tap in all their incarnations is to have lost a great part of your life to sleeping.

It's such a fine line between clever...and stupid.

Or perhaps more aptly: Gwen Guthrie's: "Aint Nothing Going On But the Rent"

And best of the best: Eric B. & Rakim "Paid in Full"

Boy, nothin’ in life is free
That’s why I’m askin’ you what can you do for me
I’ve got responsibilities
So I’m lookin’ for a man whose got money in his hands

‘Cause nothin’ from nothin’ leaves nothin’
You got to have somethin’ if you wanna be with me
Oh, life is too serious, love’s too mysterious
A fly girl like me needs security

‘Cause ain’t nothin’ goin’ on but the rent
You got to have a J-O-B if you wanna be with me
Ain’t nothin’ goin’ on but the rent
You got to have a J-O-B if you wanna be with me

It was actually on Wiki. David St. Hubbins's real name is Michael McKean, who was Lenny. Case solved.

actually boz tried to steal that song from the most amazing fenton robinson. fenton first recorded it in 1967. boz in 1969, but "forgot" to give credit to mr. robinson...just sayin.

I've seen him many times live and it's always a great show.
One time at 4th and B here in San Diego during the breakdown in one song, Joe was jamming on the Keytar and some douche was taking flash photos right in his face and Joe nearly beaned the guy in the melon with it when security grabbed the dude.
Then the show went on.
One of the best live performers ever.

Madonna - Material Girl

I saw Madonna when I was 9 on the Who's That Girl tour, maybe 13 or 14 on Blond Ambition, and then at 21 on American Life (I think). Always kills it.

If you want that girl
Listen son
Don't you sit around and cry
Because love
In this world
Ain't nothing you can't buy

She's got
Ruby lips
And emerald eyes
She's got diamonds on her mind
If you want that girl
What you need is

James Taylor's "Money Machine:"

Money, money, money, money, money, money, money, money, money, money,
Ooo, that money machine.
Now you can measure you manhood by it. You can get your children to try it.
You can bring your enemies to their knees
with the possible exception of the North Vietnamese.
It takes a strong hit from the money machine, sitting on top, on top of the world.
Strong hit from the money machine, sitting on top, on top of the world.

Oh, General Motors and IBM. AFL-CIO and all the king's men.
When I began the game, see me singing about the fire and rain.
Let me just say it again, I've seen fives and I've seen tens.
It was a strong hit from the money machine, sitting on top, on top of the world.
Strong hit from the money machine, sitting on top, on top of the world.

Money, money, money, money, money, money, money, money, money, money, ha ha ha.
Money, money, money, money, money, money, money, money, money, money.
Give me that dough, give me that dough, give me that dough, give me that dough.

A little man walked up and down,
To find an eating place in town.
He read the menu through and through,
To see what fifteen cents could do.

One meat ball,
One meat ball,
He could afford but one meat ball.

He told the waiter near at hand,
The simple dinner he had planned.
The guests were startled one and all,
To here that waiter loudly call,

One meat ball,
One meat ball,
This here gent wants one meat ball.

The little man felt ill at ease
And said "Some bread, sir, if you please."
The waiter's voice roared through the hall
"You gets no bread with one meatball!"

One meat ball,
One meat ball,
You gets no bread with one meat ball.

The little man felt very bad,
For one meat ball was all he had,
And in his dreams he hears that call,
You gets no bread with one meat ball.

One meat ball,
One meat ball,
You gets no bread with one meat ball.

LSD = Pounds, Shillings, Pence

Rather funny contemporary jab at "Money (that's what I want)"; and it rocks. But the joke was lost on those unfamiliar with British currency.

And if that doesn't work for ya', how about Warren Zevon's "Lawyers, Guns and Money"?
