C&L's Late Nite Music Club: The 50 State Strategy with Riddle of Steel (MO)
The Riddle of Steel from Conan the Barbarian is (more or less) that despite all appearances, flesh is stronger than steel. Counterintuitive, yes -- but not as much as the Riddle of Riddle of Steel, which goes like this: how can a band this electrifying and unique and pound the pavement between their home in St. Louis and both coasts and not become the toast of the millions of rock fans who buy every Queens of the Stone Age and Foo Fighters album? It's one for the ages, folks.
Riddle of Steel more or less hung it up last year (they're playing one more show in October in "The Lou") but if you're a fan of the heavy, melodic and subversive go out and get their albums "1985", "Got This Feelin'" and "Python" stat, and shake your head at the injustice at the ears of the inattentive and fickle plebs.
Every Monday night, C&L's Late Nite Music Club showcases an act from every state, alphabetically by state, as part of LNMC's 50 State Strategy. Know a band or artist that you think is the best in their state? Email suggestions to latenitemusicclub [at] gmail.com. Next week: Montana.

Riddle of Steel rocks!
Corporate rock misses yet another band more substantial than any of the crap played on the 'local' radio stations.
Crom, this band's name makes me wanna hear Riders of Doom: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onGWF8mz1Zw
I wonder when the true odd couple of John Milius & Oliver Stone will work on another movie together!
G'nite!
Speaking of great songs and movies, here's one of my faves:

Zeds here. Goodnight!
A band shouldn't be judged just on one song, but I can't say I was terribly impressed. Didn't sound much different from a couple of dozen other Foo Fighter-type bands (not to imply that they are original or good either, just that they've become the stereotype).
the song "John Frum" on their MySpace, shows a little more depth (but there was no vid, so I couldn't post.) On the whole, the guitar work, lyrics, and three-piece economy sets them far apart from all the Foo/Queens clones.
I can answer the question why they aren’t more popular. The singer is tone deaf and the music is out of tune. Granted the recordings are badly engineered. There is nothing about them that is unique. They are a typical band plucked from the cultural wasteland that is suburbia.
The band even comes with the perquisite odd band name which is the first sign that they are desperately trying to be “different”. Now that I think about it, considering their complete lack of originality: I wonder why they aren’t more popular.
perhaps a little harsh in the assessment, but overall, yeah...a bit lacking - the drummer doesn't seem in synch with a rather muted bass, and the production is weaker than the coffee i had this morning. i can imagine them being cool to see live if they were in synch and the room was rocking, but this didn't really float my boat...

Haven't heard of these guys. I will definitely check them out. Disappointed to see that they are breaking up. It rocks, and has a very nice bridge-outro kind of thing. Better than the Foos IMO.
I will be all the happier if I never hear another proggy emo/indy rock band/song in my life.

They all are still out there making music and touring!
Roman Numerals themselves would advocate for my ROS feature, but these are all good suggestions. Next round!
