C&L's Late Nite Music Club - The Boss Turns 60!
The second generation of great rockers is now officially in its golden years today, as Bruce Springsteen celebrates his 60th birthday. He's been an old soul since releasing his first album over 36 years ago, and is pretty much at the top of his game now, with the consistent sold out shows, command performance at the inauguration, worldwide respect and adulation and whatnot.
On a more personal note, at the young age of four I saw the video for "Born in the USA" on MTV and told my Dad I wanted to play guitar, which resulted in a half size nylon string acoustic guitar and some lessons from a patient teacher willing to deal with a precocious kindergartener, and all the trappings great and bad that follow on that path in the subsequent 25 years. I'm sure there are thousands of others with the same story, and on behalf of us all I say Happy Birthday, Boss. Don't ever stop playing.

Nothing says Bruce like 'Jungleland'

I think he's a great guy, and I like the stuff I hear of his, but I honestly could not name more than a couple of his songs. I got that way because Time mag ran a huge thing on John Hammond's latest, and while I appreciated Hammond's contribution to the big band era, I
hateloathe Dylan. And Time was playing up Springsteen as the next big thing, like Dylan! So the stage was set for me to not be wild about Bruce. It's probably like not being into the Beatles.
So here's an old song I like that has nothing to do with El Jefe.
Love My Way (acoustic)
me-oww!
I love that song, miss_kitty! Thanx :)
your opinion is just that. I don't know those bands you list, and your insults are unnecessary and personal attacks. I never said anything nasty about people who like Dylan and Springsteen, because, unlike you, I understand taste in music music is purely personal.
I also don't need to put people down for their taste in music to feel superior, which I've seen you do time and again.
You set NO table here unless you consider unabashed vitriol part of a table setting. BTW, if you'd paid attention, you'd see I grew up when Dylan was starting out.

And also celebrating are Mickey Rooney, Ray Charles (RIP), George Castanza, and myself(49 today).
I've been a fan since the mid 70s, largely due to some prodding from, of all people, my rabbi! He was a young guy who motored into our little town in a VW bus that had a bumper sticker on it that read, "And on the eighth day God created Bruce Springsteen." He convinced me to go see the Boss, which I did the next time he came to Cincinnati. I got to the show early and there was Gordie with his yarmulke and a work shirt that had "THE BOSS" embroidered on the back. And he had his binoculars even though he was in the eighth row. ("I want to see every pore on his nose!")
What an incredible show. No warm up act; started at 8:00 PM and went to nearly 12:30 AM with only a 20 minute break. Absolutely, enthrallingly incredible. He played three encores and finally fell to his knees screaming, "I'm just a prisoner of rock n' roll!" as the roadies dragged him off the stage.
gamar tov
this year should only bring you and your family joy
I'm not Jewish, but Shana Tova! If I did that right.
And may YOUR family, and friends, find a sweet new year for all.
Shalom, and Slainte Mhath!
I'm a thoroughly lapsed Jew in terms of observance, but only a truly mean spirited person would not return the good wishes.
Gamar tov, and may you and your family be inscribed in the book of life for another year.

The screen door slams
Mary's dress sways
Like a vision she dances
Across the porch as the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing "For the Lonely"
Hey, that's me and I want you only
Don't turn me home again
I just can't face myself alone again
Don't run back inside, darlin'
You know just what I'm here for
So you're scared and you're thinking
That maybe we ain't that young anymore
Show a little faith
There's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty
But hey, you're alright
And that's alright with me...
The most romantic song I've ever heard.

and saying you were four when you saw the video for Born in the USA.
Per the "title", Darkness on the Edge of Town is clearly Springsteen's greatest record ever.
I know there's a lot of argument between lovers of that album and Born to Run, but Darkness is far superior.
IMO, of course.. :)
On "Darkness" - definitely his best record. It's a Highway to Hell v. Back in Black situation though.
That's cool
I never liked him
Other than Born to Run

Tell me about it when you reach that juncture about how Golden everything is.
I didn't "get" Bruce until "The Rising," and it might be sacrelige to say this, but I like this decade's music the best!
This song might perhaps be the best:

Was in 1974 or so...with the E Street Band. It was at Armadillo World Headquarters (long gone) in Austin when I was in college. No reserved seats, just a hangar-sized room with about one or two thousand people. They played for three solid hours...the highest energy show I've ever seen, and I've seen many of the legends in concert. Clarence Clemons on sax kicked ass.
The price of my ticket? ONE DOLLAR.
