C&L's Late Nite Music Club with Pearl Jam

Title: The Fixer

I don't want to get C+L in trouble with Universal Music Group by ripping the official video for "The Fixer" (they've disabled embedding) and uploading it to our servers, but you can watch it here. The song is the real star here anyway; Pearl Jam sounds like a revitalized band with something to prove on this track. The secret is that they are, perhaps.

Backspacer, the bands new album, comes out this Sunday.

I learned to be a musician with her and the two gentlemen with her.

I've been looking for a clip from Nashville, to no avail. He was scary great in that film.

I loved Henry Gibson.

Sometimes it amazes me how liberal my parents used to be.

PP&M, The Smothers Brother's Comedy Hour and Laugh-In were all staples in our home.

Who can forget Henry Gibson standing alone on the stage with the huge daisy reciting his subversive little poems...I didn't "get" most of them originally, I was too small, but I remember my mom and dad laughing long and loud.

these days...especially on TV. Its' all crime shows, murder and mayhem, or stupid 'reality' shows, or dumb talent contests.

There's no more variety shows, with music and dancing and comedy and magic and .....people who had actual talent, and points of view and were willing to speak out.

I went to high school and college through the 1960's - we sang the folk music (everyone had a guitar) in the dorm and at 'hootenannies'...and marched against the war to the protest songs. I adored Peter, Paul and Mary and the Kingston Trio and the Chad Mitchell Trio and Joan Baez and many, many others....who wrote and performed such wonderful music with meaning. Sigh, where are the protest songs for this age????

Was just on the Youtube (sic) and found some really cool stuff...

Julie Andrews and Cass Elliot singing two different medleys of songs..One Simon and Garfunkel..and the other...Cass's songs..I was wishing the whole time that someone had a good quality version of it..couldn't find it..only the tv speaker version, nothing crisp.

Then found Cass Elliot and John Denver singing Leaving on a Jet Plane...beautiful.

Johnny Cash and Joni Mitchell singing "Long Black Veil"...awesome.

Found a really nice version of The Cruel War, by a vocal group from Wisconsin. Did the PP&M arrangement...it was beautiful.

There are protest songs these days, they just don't sound like this. Myself, I love some of the stuff that Green Day has done..and other as well.Late can't think of specifics at the moment.

I loved Henry in The Blues Brothers. His role was not large, but his part was HUGE. He was a gifted actor and funny man.

Also, his first role in Jerry Lewis's The Nutty Professor was another part that made him a staple in my family. Lewis even calls him Gibson. That was great.

RIP Henry.

And Mary. I grew up with PP&M. Lots of good memories of the 60's.

The music...and the women.

I wanted to write like Joni Mitchell, sing like Cass Elliot and have the convictions on Mary Travers...also her go go boots...: )

Nice version, Mary. Thanks.

Three of the most influential women in music history singing together. Wonderful!

... but their music? Pffh.

Alice in Chains, Soundgarden, Mudhoney and Nirvana are/were all better. Heck, Ellensburg's own Screaming Trees, too. (Disclosure: I lived in Seattle from 1986 to 2004, the golden period during which these bands burst onto the music scene.)

This song really blows. They sound like they are trying to be relevant or something. The Stones knew how to change with the times. Not so much with Pearl Jam. Pearl Jam should hang it up and go surfing. Actually I thought they already did. We can thank Eddie Veder for the worst line in a song ever...."She's and empty canvas...." Get painting Eddie. Oh wait I forgot about Mary. I can't wait to see Peter Paul and Mary footage for the next 2 months on one of the two channels I get; PBS. Sorry that she had to pass but I would have booed her and the 2 Stooges at a library gig with my kids. Now that's cold..

Since that's consistent with how irrelevant they are.

Srsly, who the hell is actually moved by the music of Pearl Jam?

More like, Bore-el Jam, amiright?
