C&L's Late Nite Music Club with Siouxsie and the Banshees

Title: Dear Prudence
Artist: Siouxsie and the Banshees

I heard Joe Cocker's version of "With a Little Help From My Friends" in the car yesterday, which started a long discussion about what everyone's favorite Beatles cover is. This one is mine, but I haven't heard nearly enough to make a great judgment.

No band has been covered as often or in so many different styles -- so bring on your favorites!

I love Fiona Apple's cover of 'Across The Universe', but this cover of Dear Prudence is excellent...

It's very emotional. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H71Fv3PcQQY
Try to ignore little Dakota Fanning though.

Not exactly a cover, but The Chemical Brothers' "Setting Sun" f/Noel Gallagher (the ultimate Beatles rip-off artist)on vocals borrows heavily, to put it nicely, from "Tomorrow Never Knows." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mJE6-wFaq7o

If we're looking at individual Beatles, REM's cover of John Lennon's "#9 Dream" from the "Instant Karma" album (Amnesty International campaign to save Darfur) is really good. I can't find it on YouTube, but you can listen to it on Rhapsody. http://www.rhapsody.com/album/instant-karma-t...

Finally, as a bonus, the Foo Fighters' cover of "Baker Street" is totally on steroids and one of my all-time faves! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=axdBNCovYBc

Great post, have always loved the Siouxsie cover, and the commenter submissions here are amazing. Isn't this more fun than arguing politics?

I don't know why people cover Across the Universe. It seems like way too personal a song for anyone but Lennon to sing. I've never heard a cover that was any good IMO.

loved thier south pacific album!bloody mary, some enchanted evening, bali high, thier is nothing like a dame, you have to be taught to hate,ah sweet jasus!

I used to see the Grateful Dead live when Jerry was still with us- i loved them, bt always thought their cover of Dear Prudence was AWFULL.

Siouxie & the Banshees did a MUCH better cover of the song.

. . . is their cover of the Beatles' "I'm Down" (on the Permanent Vacation album).

Thanks, mudshark!

The first time I heard Come Together it was done by Aerosmith and I had no idea it was a Beatles tune. I thought it was the most badass tune since all of Van Halen's stuff.

Which brings me to my fav cover: John Brim's Ice Cream Man as performed by Van Halen.

...not to mention the Ronstadt tune 'You're No Good',
...or the Kinks 'You Really Got Me!'

Van Halen rocked it all out!

The Aerosmith cover is from their gig as the "Future Villain Band" in the 1978 "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" -- a film featuring all Beatles music, but without the Beatles. People like to bash on the movie a lot, but I grew up with it and credit it for my general love of the Beatles' music today.

The Aerosmith cover is probably the best of that particular soundtrack, although I do like Steve Martin's version of "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" and Frankie Howerd's "When I'm 64".

D

Hey Jude. Better than the original?

http://www.jazz.com/music/2008/11/6/don-ellis...

is a rendition chock-full of "special" mushroomy goodness. I need to remember to order that LP on CD (as well at Tears of Joy - probably my fave).

Siouxsie & The Banshees - Kiss Them For Me

It's not a Beatle's cover though

hey

slightly off-topic, but speakin' of music...

tomorrow's john amato's birthday. don't nobody go tellin' him, but i got him the perfect gift.

many of you might know amato fancies himself something of a flute flutterer.

don't believe the hype; the guy's terrible. i daresay lou ferrigno would win a "flute-off".

amato's playing's so god-awfully grating, it shatters bullet proof glass, and sends sewer rats scurrying for their lives.

so i got the poor bastard a new flute, from toys r us. it's pink and white, and it plays "yankee doodle" with the press of a button!

oh jeez froggy his birthday was last week!

well then his facebook profile's messed up.

at any rate, i hope he digs my gift. it plays "taps" and "hit the road jack" as well...

First bullfrog's picking on Amato, then he forgets Amato's actually birthday? Sheesh!

the bit about the glass and the sewer rats.

it's like when comrades butt heads after winning the superbowl.

Someone very wise once told me that what might look like a bone of contention between men is actually a bonding session, lol...

Tori Amos' version of Happiness Is a Warm Gun...I remember when I first heard it, I wasn't prepared for the audio clips that had been included...

Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds (Elton John). Or one of my all-time faves, Eleanor Rigby done by Ray Charles.

Cool version of that song by Siouxsie, Max!

Ike & Tina Turner - Come together

Ticket to Ride

my all time favorite band =)

Saw the post about the Norwegian metal guy. I was there when a kid stabbed some old lady, and the entire country was scandalised. Blamed it on the US for some reason. It was the embarrassing spring of the Kennedy Smith rape trial.

Church burnings and facing off in a knife fight -- must have constituted a national crisis...

that I was pretty saddened by some of the crap those Norwegian metallers were up to, some of the churches they burned down were really ancient and can't be replaced. I'm a history major, so my heart hurts when shit like that happens...

I can't believe Norwegians burnt them. But then I can't believe Norwegians would steal 'The Scream'

Thank you.
Seriously.
:)

so

Was that a reference to the fact that Husker Du is Norwegian for "Do You Remember"?

yes

My relatives thought that was the best band name ever...one they'd never forget.

is the name of a Scandanavian board game.

YMO

Yellow Magic Orchestra - Day Tripper

I can't stand Joe Cocker's version of With a Little Help.... but when it comes to great Beatles covers, track down some of World Party's b-sides. Karl Wallinger's versions of Happiness is a Warm Gun, Penny Lane and All You Need Is Love are so faithful it's scary!

Johnny Cash - In My Life

that is the bomb.

:D

That was totally creepy!

at the sight of Sean in his red underwear ...

Quick, get me some macaroni with that cheeeeze!

I love that. Johnny Cash was so special.

My friend used that version as the father-daughter dance at her wedding on my suggestion :-) It was beautiful.

'Norwegian Wood' was his nickname... :P

But, all things change, back & forth, in time.

How about a Beatles video rip-off?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQxl9EI9YBg&fe...

and karaoked it.

Trash - Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight

But you officially rock by choosing Siouxsie and the Banshees as a featured band. The Banshees have done some great cover songs. Another good Beatles cover they did was "Helter Skelter." That song jams.

Sarah McLachlan - Blackbird

who knew he could do the Beatles...

Peter Sellers - A Hard Days Night

STP

ok, that's it. Ga nite folks. Hey aangus, howzit goin?
This ones fer u
adios amigos. buenos noches.

And naturally this has nothing to do with the Beatles but I had to get ya with your Tiff/Deb love.

Geez, who does this chick remind us of?

Basement Jaxx (feat Siouxsie Sioux) - Kish Kash

Siouxsie & the Banshees - Cities in Dust

.

Ohhh! Sergio Mendes, yes!

U2- Helter Skelter

Haven't heard it, but possibly the worst cover might be Sean Connery covering "In My Life".

Please see above.

:)

I'll collect my Coke® later.

WWDT? What was Dylan thinking?

There are so many awful Beatles covers that it is kind of dangerous to even talk about.

The one I always hated (which my friends loved and forced me to listen to) was back in my "metal" days. Kick Axe (oh lord, what a name...) With a Little Help From My Friends.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOkYsO24Vzs

with a fabulous Rutland sound created by the pre fab four, Dirk, Nasty, Stig and Barry. A musical legend that will last a lunch time.

Jeff Healey...his cover of 'My Guitar Gently Weeps' is wonderful.

Siouxsie and the Banshees - Helter Skelter

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szPQCvJ8MPg

(Oops, I see MetalMarx mentioned it above. Anyway, here's a link to a live performance of it.)

Paul McCartney.

The best Beatles cover.

LOL

:(

I had to add this one . I had to.
OK, adios.

...

It's ok. I love Fiona Apple, I had a girlfriend that looked like her long long long long time ago.

Siouxsie and The Banshees - Peek A Boo

but, I really miss Hell-O-Scam!!!

It would seem that Olivia, or someone else, has removed most of the Concert For George vids from u-tubby. (I suspect someone other than Olivia.)

*Hangs head!*

Theodore Bikel did a version of "For No One" that I loved long before I ever even knew who The Beatles were. It was such a beautiful song that it stuck with me for years. When I became a Beatlemaniac at the tender age of 10, I got Revolver for Christmas. Boy, was I surprised to find that song on there!

I was a Beatlemaniac before I even knew it!

Guess what Beatles cover I just found?

But who cares about the sixties?

Love their live cover of "Tomorrow Never Knows" found on their Cancionero compilation!!

801 was a short-lived project with Phil Manzanera and Brian Eno, from Roxy Music. Their live album, 801 Live, has my favorite cover of one of my favorite Beatles songs. A true classic.

I agree that Joe C.'s version of "With a Little Help" is the best, but I also like:

Dwight Yoakam "The Things We Said Today"

Crosby, Stills and Nash "Blackbird"

Pretty good.

WARNING!!!

Not Beatles cover!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kw54-rCIrPs&fe...

So shoot me.
:)

Great choice. I love Siouxsie Sioux. Used to have her name written across the back of my leather jacket (when I was a youner punk!) She has some great stuff, Dazzle, Christine, Hong Kong Garden, Israel, Happy House, and You're Lost Little Girl are some of my favorites.

I Am The Walrus

The 801 Live version of TNK has been a fave for a long time too

The Beatles - Hey Jude

Julian Lennon on John

I love John Lennon. I just posted this because it's extremely interesting. Human beings are just that.

I'm a huge John Lennon fan, too. And, in fact, I think "Dear Prudence" may be my favorite Beatles' song.

Hey Bulldog?

It's an album track on an album that was released in South Africa. Couldn't find a link, but it's awesome.

I went through the comments but didn't see this one...I love this cover...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxE_JtDGIOI

...

I still remember watching my mom cry for days when Lenon was killed. It makes me so sad, the same hatred spread by these republican fascists christian neocon nwo conservative morons(whatever you want to call them, you know who I mean), were the same ones that killed him. They destroyed my chances to succeed to my full potential, and now destroyed on a larger scale the hopes and dreams of people all around the world. How can we let them go on? Why? They have been and still are destroying the fundamental fabric of the human race. Don't fool yourselves they are still in control, even more now than ever, they will offer up scape goats to satisfy us but they are in absolute power and control over all of us. They won't stop till the last drop of blood is squeezed from our souls.

(Not beatles. don't shoot me!)

This movie came out when I was in early elementary school. It simulaneously entranced and scared the hell out of me. I was like six or something but I hadn't seen THE CHENEY yet so I didn't know how freakin' scary things could get.

I always think of the corporate mo-fos as "skeksis". Call me strange.

We are all Gelflings.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPaKNafdJ18

..

This 1 is a little closer to reality, no not the Beatles either.
If you search around a bit you will find a clip of a guy making a very strange speech, that guy sounds just like Kerry a known skull and bones member.

"Working Class Hero" (live)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3N_rNz2oAGA

My fav Beatles cover:

Willie Bobo - Michelle (Track 16) -- love that Cuban jazz

and a Beatles not-cover -- a technical masterpiece of a Beatles mashup called only "Beatles Medley" by Hank Handy:

song with someone else's video edit

D

Off the Beatles tribute album, "I Got No Kick Against Modern Jazz". In a very close second place would be Groove Collective's "I Want You (She's So Heavy)". Actually, the whole damn album's really, really good. :) Go buy it if you can still find it. :)

Frank Zappa - I Am The Walrus.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSNhGWmgYVk

Definitely a great cover and I believe this was done around the time Robert Smith (the Cure guy) was working with Souixsie (he can be seen drunkenly wandering around the video), as well as recording the Glove's Blue Sunshine album (another classic). I recall an interview with Robert Smith where he said during that period he was working with the Cure and then would drive a longways at night through the English countryside to record with Souixsie, drinking and doing acid the whole time.

"It's All Too Much" by Steve Hillage.

Gissandro Guitar Maximus!

Another great Beatle's cover is the one of Tomorrow Never Knows that appears on the Strange Times album of one of UK music's most underated bands ever, The Chameleons. Mark Burgess of the Chameleons was always a huge Lennon fan so he prob had a great time doing the cover.

)O(

My favorite Beatles cover

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=szPQCvJ8MPg

U2 covered this song too:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7Mvrl1NPQM

)O(

Not as intense.

And I tend to giggle when Bono introduces it as if they were the first to cover it (on their album).

Todd Rungdren did a good cover of this song that I downloaded off of I-Tunes. Can only find an 11 second snippet though:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=koA1xj9GuC4

Adam Curry (Currie in I-Tunes?) did a great cover of this song too.

Retains the best of the original. Sometimes when it ain't broke, don't try to fix it. The Ramones cover Mozart and the London Philharmonic play the Stones [yes, I know] would both be wrong.

I was in a band that did a funky version of Iam the Walrus.
Now I'm in a band doing a country version of Helter Skelter.

Although, I am still waiting for a death metal /polka fusion mix. I think it is the only fusion that hasn't happened in music.

LSD

I think Elton's version of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds is very good and also features the reggae guitars of Dr. Winston O'Boogie.

Glad to see 801's TNK getting so much love.

The Wedding Present does a great cover of "Getting Better," with twice the energy of the original.

And here's a fun mashup of "I Saw Her Standing There" and Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues."

http://www.quietfm.com/Music/Positively%20Fif...

The Beatles sucked, and so did the Stones. The essential British groups of the 1960s were The Who and The Hollies. Even The Jam were more important.

The Damned's version of "Help" was a vast improvement on the original.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-CxaAtdmTw

Al Green doing an awesome version of I Want to Hold Your Hand

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=01T8dekeHss

A surf instrumental version of Eleanor Rigby.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ON-3d2a6LGg&fe...

I have to agree that Siouxsie and the Banshees' Dear Prudence is one of the top Beatles covers.

I have also always enjoyed The Waterboys cover of Van Morrisons Sweet Thing where they incorporated lyrics from Blackbird at the end. Fabulous arrangement.
