C&L's Late Nite Music Club with Stone Temple Pilots

Title: Sour Girl
Artist: Stone Temple Pilots

From the grunge era but not quite of it, Stone Temple Pilots really excelled most when the world of flannel was in decline, diving deeper into psychedelia and power-pop on their last three albums. Since they continued to get better after their heyday, there's reason to suspect great things in the works for the reformed band's new album, which they're currently working on with legendary producer Don Was (and Weiland's longtime collaborator friend of the site Douglas Grean on engineering duties.)

Sour Girl, from their fourth album aptly titled No. 4, shows the band sounding more like the Zombies than Pearl Jam, a form which always worked well for them.

STP is hitting the road for 24 shows with the original quartet intact. Dates after the flip.

My favorite STP song. Scott Weiland's voice sounds as good as ever on this one.

I really enjoyed that. Nice string accompaniment too. Thanks, Max!

The other three guys in STP are extremely underrated.

I always liked the bass player. Active and more melodic lines than most rock bass players. Maybe its just because I'm a bass player.

Same here. This mix is excellent. ;)

I always felt these guys were, together, much greater then the sum of their parts, always well constructed songs.

I don't know if Weiland is better sober or not sober, I just hope he's healthy. IMO his vocal repertoire is pretty limited, they need strong music with that kind of singer.

How do they miss the entire midwest except for Columbus?

They never got the respect they deserve

This ones great

yet I never really listened to the lyrics before you put that link up. The music is perfect to express all the same emotion on an even more basic level. That's how to write a f'in song!!

The DeLeos are the heart of that band! Everyone who looks under the surface of STP has to recognize the raw talent that underpins the obvious "star-packaging".

I had the same reaction to them both; STP after hearing 'Plush,', and Beck after hearing 'Loser:'

"Record company-created one-hit wonder."

Wow, was I wrong. On both counts. ('Sex Type Thing' and 'Where It's At' disabused me rather quickly, respectively.)

I think it's the peculiar--not psychedelism, not futurism--but the peculiar chromaticism of No. 4 that makes it my favorite STP album.

Edit:

Almost forgot. STP's Dancing Days is the best Zeppelin Cover…Ever.

Heard that Sunday on XM, great stuff!

But...Dread Zeppelin was awesome. :-D

And Rush does some amazing stuff with Zep too.

c. 461 Ocean Blvd. But I really liked it from the very first listening.

Why can't they come to South friggin Florida?
That's ANOTHER thing that sucks about living here...no good music comes down this far south!
I am SO tired of goddamn jimmy buffett cover bands...If I hear cheeseburger in paradise ONE more time...the next asshole I see with a parrot on his shoulder is gettin a solid kick to the shinbone!

SoFla is the big black hole for rock concerts! :(

You have Bertie Higgins too.

No. 4 saved rock n roll for me in 00.

Ah those elegant bachelors.

The thing I recall is schlock and lameness, with just enough of knack for mimicking more innovative groups and refried (timeless-but-safe, conservative, corporate radio friendly) classic rock, that they had a hint more cred than, what, Jar of Flies or whatever similar dreck the major labels had on offer at the time.

Just saying. More power to you if STP rocks yr world, beauty in the eye of the beholder and all that...but let's get real: there's a rather large and (in my musical universe, especially at the time) an obvious case against these dudes' 'place in the firmament'. And it wrankles to so regularly see Max presenting mediocre (or worse) music history as greatness on one of my favorite blogs.

This aggression will not stand, man.

Pavement were right to mock them on Crooked Rain as looking to many an awful lot like phony, star-machine packaged posers in a pretty cool window of music industry time when independent labels had all the juice, if not half the dollars.

This is a bit rude maybe, given the other comments, but an honest 2 cents, and worth mentioning. It's which side of the flag you're pulling from in the tension between music biz unit-shifting and musical creativity. A musical analog of DuBois vs Booker T.

The VU vs. the Monkees.

Northeast show?

Remember the show in Tampa last year where Scott Weiland was too busy sleeping off a heroin binge to show up? To top it off, the promoters knew the asshole was not showing up, yet they marched out the opening band, then kept announcing that STP was going to play but they were delayed in route from South Florida, and after over an hour delay they finally announced that the show was not going on. Great way to pump up alcohol sales for the concert that never happened.

To repeat, Fuck these Assholes. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.
