C&L's Late Night Music Club with Propellerheads Featuring Shirley Bassey
By Stella Barkwell Sunday Apr 05, 2009 7:00pmShirley Bassey is a vocal powerhouse. At 68, she covered Pink’s ‘Get This Party Started’ in a voice that does not betray her age. If this seems sedate in comparison to the original, it was part of an ad campaign for Marks and Spencer.
She is the only singer to have sung more than one Bond theme, ‘Goldfinger,’
‘Diamonds Are Forever’ and ‘Moonraker.’
I read somewhere that the Propellerheads wrote this song with Bassey in mind. She turned them down and suggested they try Tina Turner. They said that it wouldn’t be what they had wanted, and she relented.
The video is made to look like the BBC’s music series, Jazz 625.
This song was used in Jaguar adverts for awhile. I guess it was to let the buying public know that Jags would look just like Fords from that point on.

That is one sexy video. Shirley Bassey is truly one of the greats! Cool breakdancers too.
Thanks for the wonderful treat!
just can't control themselves in the face of big beat, and spontaneously burst into breaking :-)
But no matter how many times I see it, I still don't believe people can dance on their heads :)
That dude was spinning!
:)
Thanks for posting this video! I know this song well, but I was ignorant about Shirley Bassey.
Love Shirley, I have an original LP of her from way back in the 70's - I bought it then. My favorite Shirley song is "This is My Life!!"
She can belt 'em.
I phoned a station that was playing it and talked to the DJ; I suggested he add the Bassey info, like what is on this page, but he wasn't interested in passing it along.
Thank you, Stella Barkwell! Most Americans got their first taste of Bassey when she had a world-wide hit with the "Goldfinger" theme in 1964. The soundtrack LP (on United Artists?) sold mega-units and it found a welcome spot on my family's turntable, too. Great singer, cool video, cool song, excellent production values and a sheer pleasure to watch. Nice job! Nice choice!
I am really spooked about this song right now... I posted it on Facebook the other day and then heard it on satellite at work the same day. I went to a retro night at a bar here in KC and the Dj played it (same night). So I was already spooked out. It sort of vanished into the back of my head when just seconds ago I ran across said Dj's setlist and saw the song... and literally left that website for this one.
History is indeed repeating.
I've had it in my faves for a long time.
I was trying to find out today if Humphrey Lyttleton (host of Jazz 625) was the trumpet player we see glimpses of in the vid, by I can't find any cast info for the video. And I'm not sure myself. I would have thought there was some info on teh internets if it was him.
I DO think history is repeating myself.
Great pick!
Also shot retro-style - Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings - "100 Days, 100 Nights"

Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings are awesome. Thanks, Batocchio!
Alerta_Alerta is a right wing goob (employed?) to initiate a convo to play with your values. Not the first time nor the last. Let's have fun with them, they are here for a short time!!
Don't mistake disagreement or the lack of communication between you and another commenter as proof that that other commenter is a troll. It's a great big world out there. There's more to it than you know. I know- or at least I suspect- why you don't get Alerta_Alerta. Use your brain and try to figure it out before you go spreading rumors, please.
Okay, I've given you two hints. Here's the third (pay attention to the first five words):
www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8OuXR0rzz8
went to a live concert back in umm-mm 1968 (?) at Lehigh University.
The Isley Bros were also there. The concert was in the gymnasium and everyone was "dancin'" in the bleachers - I thought they would collapse and we'd all die. But, we'd die happy!
Jeanne
History repeating, in French.
Here's Hardy at the beginning of her career:
Tous les garcons et le filles
(And so are you, sweet Andy.)
I just love French songs ... :)
That's where I first heard it. Tracked it down, put it on the iPod, listen to it regularly, love it!
This song is also in the movie "Something about Mary"
Cinematic Orchestra & Ms. Fontella Bass

& yes the same Fontella Bass that did "Rescue Me" way way back in the Day.
That is a lovely song indeed, and 'Rescue Me' is another one of my faves.
Excellent. Wow. 68? She looks and sounds great.
She's about 68 in the 'Get This Party Started' video.
Still, great at either age!
