I remember when Otis Redding died, in December, 1967, when the plane he was on crashed into Lake Monona in WI. And I remember how I waited for that very last song of his to be released in January, ‘Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay.’ It took forever.
This clip is a live performance from Ready, Steady, Go! (RSG!), a British music show with dancers and groups like the U.S.’s Shindig, American Bandstand, and Hullabaloo.

Here is Otis, whose roots were in the south and gospel, really performing hard, at the end of the show, and having a great time on stage.

He is joined by Eric Burdon of the Animals and English R&B singer Chris Farlowe.

And catch the action around 1:40. Is that dancer [in the Jean Shrimpton make-up] freak dancing Otis?

I read somewhere that the whistling part of Dock of the Bay was going to have lyrics, he just hadn't written them yet.

What a talented guy. 'Sittin on the Dock of the Bay' is one of my faves.

Thank you, Stella!

I came across this song by Sigur Ros and it reminded me of the scene in Shawshank Redemption when Tim Robbins's character played the opera record over the prison PA system. Morgan Freeman's character stated, "I have no idea to this day what those two Italian ladies were singing about. Truth is, I don't want to know. Some things are best left unsaid. I'd like to think they were singing about something so beautiful, it can't be expressed in words, and makes your heart ache because of it."

Well, I looked up a translation of those Icelandic lyrics and I still really enjoy the song:

Thanks!

It's a pity that you haven't posted the emtire segment. Otis starts with a brilliant veersion of "Can't Turn You Loose" before seamlessly segwaying into this version of "Shake". The ending with "Land of 1000 Dances" shows how much fun they were having doing this.

Whenever l have one of my young cousins talk about live performances l show them the full clip of this segment. Along with James Brown doing "Please, Please, Please" live at the Apollo l haven't seen anything better.

Ready, Steady, Go! Otis Redding Special Pt. 1

Ready, Steady, Go! Otis Redding Special Pt. 2

Ready, Steady, Go! Otis Redding Special Pt. 3

Ready, Steady, Go! Otis Redding Special Pt. 4

'I Can't Turn You Loose,' followed by 'Shake'

Young Eric holds his own with the great otis Redding. Wow, that dancer to the left of Otis is working almost as hard as he is. Nice work if you can get it.

Sorry, I'm more of an Animals fan than an Otis Redding fan! :)

:-P

Wikipedia: House of the Rising Sun. It says, "The arranging credit went only to Alan Price. According to Burdon, this was simply because there was insufficient room to name all five band members on the record label, and Alan Price's name was first alphabetically. However, this meant that only Price received songwriter's royalties for the hit, a fact that has caused bitterness ever since, especially with Valentine."

I heard it differently; Price was kicked out of the Animals because of his theft of the arranging credit.

I think that one of the great ironies of the 60's is that the first-ever folk rock hit record came from the Animals, a mostly R-and-B group.

... I'll forgive the misspelling of Eric Burdon and Chris Farlowe's names. This really shows Redding's incredible talent and charisma. He'd yet to hit his peak when he died, and one can only imagine what he would have achieved had he lived. Burdon was definitely the scrappiest frontman of any of the first-generation British Invasion combos. And Chris Farlowe, although he never achieved mainstream stardom, was arguably the era's greatest British R&B singer. He made a bunch of incredible records, many of them for Andrew Loog Oldham's Immediate label. To my ears, Farlowe's version of "Out of Time" is better than the Stones' version.

was the best of those shows in my opinion...putting together some amazing talent that would never have happened elsewhere.
What a great clip. Otis Redding & Eric Burdon...two awesome talents with unique & amazing voices.
