Sen. Josh Hawley cited Hunter Biden's stalled plea deal as the reason new charges were dropped in the Mar-a-Lago stolen classified documents case Thursday. Never mind that just a few hours earlier, before those charges were made public, a Fox News “civil rights attorney” claimed Hunter Biden’s stalled plea deal was so incriminating it scared special prosecutor Jack Smith out of indicting Donald Trump, albeit in the Jan. 6th case.

Insurrectionist coward Hawley used his Fox News platform to pretend he cares about the rule of law in order to directly attack it. It’s all a prelude to destroy our current Department of Justice and replace it with a department of MAGA loyalists. Mueller prosecutor Andrew Weissmann has predicted an all-out assault on our system of justice would be the overwhelming response to Trump’s indictment in the J6 case but Hawley was off to an earlier start.

It says a lot that Hawley used a big, fat lie to begin his so-called argument. He said, “Now, we're down to charging, like, random people, just throwing those into the indictment.” He was referring to the newest Mar-a-Lago defendant, Carlos De Oliveira who just randomly, I’m sure, allegedly drained the poll and flooded the room where security footage was kept, allegedly helped move the boxes of stolen classified material around and allegedly told the IT guy that Trump wanted the surveillance footage deleted. Yeah, could have been any one of us.

Clearly, Hawley knows there’s no real defense of his favorite insurrectionist. Instead of coming up with one, the former attorney general of Missouri moved right along to the Republicans' all-purpose scapegoat:

HAWLEY: Is it any coincidence that the DOJ rushes to add these new indictments today, after the Hunter debacle, after their own self-dealing and two-timing is exposed, after they tried to hide from us the true extent of his plea deal that gets blown up and then it's like, oh, we gotta go indict Trump on something else?

I noticed Hawley didn’t come right out and say that’s why Trump was indicted. Just asking questions!

But Hawley didn’t need to wait for any answers to start making accusations. “I mean, it's so brazen right now, what they're doing,” he said, with unintended irony.

Then, in a moment so Orwellian it went beyond irony, Hawley added, “It is really a subversion of the rule of law. I mean, they're taking the rule of law turning it on its head. And Lord, we just, we cannot allow this to stand. The American people are not going to be safe. Our rule of law, our system of government is not going to be safe.”

It's no surprise the cowardly Hawley is worried about his safety. But he knows darned well who broke the law and who is trying to enforce it. And he’s lying for the sake of destroying our democracy.
