When Matt Rosendale dropped his senate bid after barely a week recently most of us thought it was odd, but Republicans do so many stupid things these days that it didn't get much scrutiny. Well, it turns out there may be another big reason why Rosendale was anxious to quit, other than Trump endorsing his primary opponent and his lack of fundraising. Former Senator and Governor of North Dakota mentioned that there was a rumor circulating that the very-married Rosendale had knocked up a 20-year-old staffer and that he'd soon be leaving Congress due to that bit of awkwardness.

And although Rosendale immediately threatened legal action against Heitkamp on Monday, he's been strangely quiet since then, refusing to speak to reporters. It's unlikely that Heitkamp would say that if she didn't know it was true.

So here we are with the distinct possibility of the Republicans losing yet another vote in the coming weeks. The filing date is March 11 and it seems more likely than not that Matt Rosendale will not file for his congressional seat.

Rep. Matt Rosendale’s office is threatening legal action against former Sen. Heidi Heitkamp after she said on a podcast that he dropped out of the Senate race because he impregnated a staffer.

“This is 100% false and defamatory and former Senator Heitkamp will be hearing from our lawyers soon,” said Ron Kovach, a spokesperson for Rosendale (R-Mont.), in a statement.

Heitkamp, a Democrat who lost her seat to Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.) in 2018, made the allegation during an appearance on the “Talking Feds with Harry Litman” podcast. Rosendale dropped out of the race a few days ago, about a week after he officially announced he would run. It’s still unclear if he plans to seek reelection to his House seat.

“I think [the GOP] caucus may lose a member in the next couple days,” Heitkamp alleged. “Just to gossip a little bit: There’s a reason why Rosendale backed out of that Senate race — the rumor is he impregnated a 20-year-old staff person.”

Rosendale "vehemently" denies the rumors and his wife of forty years is so far standing by her man.
