Warning: Prog rock ahead.

Captain Beyond's eponymous first album was one of the prizes of my vinyl collection, and not just because of its way-cool holographic cover. I loved this album and wore out the grooves on it; at the time, I was heavily into prog rock, and these guys were inventive and had really superb musicianship. The album actually sounds better than this live performance, and I couldn't find the best song sequence (Side 2's "Thousand Days of Yesterdays," which you can hear here). Still, you get the idea.

Captain Beyond was actually a kind of second-tier supergroup. Rod Evans, the lead singer, had been Deep Purple's original lead singer (that was him singing "Hush"); drummer Bobby Caldwell was almost legendary at the time after his stint in Johnny Winter's band; and the bass player, Lee Dorman, and guitarist, Larry "Rhino" Rheinhardt, were veterans of Iron Butterfly (Dorman was the bassist on "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida").

Reportedly Rod Evans was so distraught over the tensions making their second album (which was mediocre) that he quit the music biz altogether and became a respiratory therapist.

Anyway, a little blast from the past. Enjoy.

Captain Beyond! Wow... I used to listen to these guys in the 70's. These guys were NOT COMMERCIAL AT ALL. Radio didn't play them at all (unless it was a some rare LA progressive DJ). Sufficiently Breathless was my favorite Captain Beyond album.

Back in 73, I saw Captain Beyond live and they blew me away. The next day I bought their self-titled debut album.

I still listen to Captain Beyond frequently, but on CD this time around.

but Iron Butterfly was one of the worst crap to come out of the 60s! Second only to Vanilla Fudge!

I hated "Inna Gadda Davida" (however it's spelled) when I was younger and still do. I didn't know 'til years later they had other releases. I see why most were forgotten ...

When it was good it was great. Then you had some awful crap too. Mars Volta's first album is great for modern prog stuff and Tool, while could be argued about whether prog or not, is pretty inventive rock. Never heard of Captain Beyond. Will have to check them out more.

True for a lot of prog rock, I guess, such as early Yes. Reminds me of Bill Withers' "Use Me," also from 1972.

Here's Kings and Queens, from their first album (Kieth Relf, after leaving The Yardbirds). Jane Relf, instead of Annie Haslam, is much more visible audible on other songs from the album.

Captain Beyond, and this song in particular, was the band/song that I had to learn in order to graduate from my back-of-the-music store bass guitar lessons! My bass teacher was a big fan. The damn thing still reverberates in my head. And yes, the album cover was one of those rare 3D ones that's still in my collection somewhere...now I'm gonna have to go find it! Solid album all the way through, worth the find to dive back into those grungy days of prog/hard rock.

To Tommy T: thanks for the link for UK (the band). First album was amazing; second album had its great moments; after Wetton went to form Asia, well, as they say, there went the ball game.

I loved this band the first time I heard them. I'm still playing the LP over 3 decades later.

Dancing Madly Backward is the title of a book by Michael Duffy...a Catholic. One description from a web bookseller:

'Dancing Madly Backward'. A novel torn between the realms of sensuality and spirituality. Between the good and the bad. Between the holy and unholy. Between a man and a woman lost in a colorful dance of life, all too grey.
