C&L's Late Nite Music Club: The Decemberists on The Colbert Report
A rarity: Stephen Colbert featured a musical act as guests on his Comedy Central show last night. And he picked one of the best: Portland's The Decemberists, who specialize in a traditional folk sound served up fresh, with original songs. Their lyrics and melodies, as fans know, are brilliant and enchanting.
They performed "The Wanting Comes in Waves/Repaid", from their new album, The Hazards of Love.

The Stones.

Mick is always fantastic, but Keith Richards just amazes me.
What an incredible band they are. Thanks, muddy!
I became acquainted with them when skippy featured them a few months ago at his site.
Stephen Colbert, besides his great comedic talent, has excellent taste in music!
skippy hearts the decemberists: 16 military wives
upon edit: woah, calgary lady, serendipity! i wrote my comment same time you wrote yours, thx for the plug!
I've never heard this song before. Wow! I love it.
Thanx for introducing me to their music!
Interesting.
Lady lead sanger instantly had a Gracie Slick thang goin on, with full metal impact.
I'd like to see them on acoustic stuff, with the same ensamble . . . .
African Celt music.

and simply divine!
Goodnight to all. Peace.
sorry, but ugh.
The Decemberists played a show at my college a couple of years ago, and it was highly enjoyable. I have to say the highlight of the night was Colin Meloy leaving the stage and walking outside, followed by the rest of the band, and the audience. We all gathered around in a circle as they jammed, or whatever is the indie-folk-rock-pop equivalent of jamming. We were then led back in for the finale, which I believe may have included a great cover of Morrissey's "Every Day Is Like Sunday" (although that may have come earlier in the night).
Hey, some kinda arty concept thing?
Shara Worden really rocks out on that. And Colin is, well, Colin Meloy. What a talent.
What strikes me is that the sound quality and videography on this puts SNL to shame. Colbert should have more musical acts on his show!
The influence might be there, but I think they're solidly in the pop-rock vein. Musically anyway.
Lyrically, I think you can use Andy Partridge, Bertolt Brecht, and, at times, Edgar Allen Poe for the purposes of triangulation.
Don't try to confuse the issue with half-truths and gorilla dust.
with drums, fuzztone guitars, electric keyboards! Sounds more like 60s folk *rock* to me!
The song is like 2 completely different songs sandwiched together and then Grace Slick looses 200lbs gets a face lift and runs onstage halfway through the song and takes over. The band looks like thrift store muffin-eaters from the 1990's and there are way too many of them. I lost count but I don't wish to hear it again. Check out my myspace page for something more rockin' . Sorry about the plug, time's running out on my music dream and I'm desperate. www.myspace.com/jukeboyjim
will hardly be furthered by slamming the Decembrists and encouraging people to go to your page. They are successful, and it sounds like you are not.
If you had reserved your petty criticisms I might have been open to seeing your stuff. Now I think I'll pass...
Decemberists play very smart, fun music, and have been one of my faves for years. Their lyrics are down-right scholarly, and always inventive. Good for Colbert for having them on his show.
This performance is spot on. Pretty much exactly like the album is.
The problem is.. there isn't really a song on the album that is a 'stand alone' song.. every track is connected to the one after it, and the one before.
I'm actually surprised they didn't play "The Rake song" but, it still wouldn't really work on its own too well either, IMO.
Check out Phil X rockin' a '59 Byrdland :)

As an almost, but not complete, non-sequitur (it is mvsik related), how about a LNMC featuring an interesting and most excellent cover of _Rock_The_Casbah_ ?

I'm truly surprised the otiginal didn't undergo a resurgence in popularity given the last few years' events.

^-- Watch (all of) this... it explains much of the GOP's behavior.
I should go ahead and tell you that I am not in love with the Decemberists very much but I admire their willingness to misappropriate folk idioms more than anyone out there. (Clearly S. Colbert loves too). I have attempted to do the same with my latest song (from an old Irish folk legend)and I would love you to go listen to it and tell me what you think of it!!
thx Taffy
