Usually I try to find reasonably off-the-beaten track videos for LNMC -- and I usually prefer live stuff -- but every now and then it's fun to dust off the ol' faves.
At one time this video was considered the best studio vid ever made. I expect that's no longer true, but I'd like to know what you all think would be the videos that surpass it. Post some nominees in the comments, I'll sift through them, and run some of the better ones. Obvious and well-known ones like this are welcome too.

Man. Just discovered Tibetan Bell Music set to Win amp's visualizer. A Chemical free high that is hard to put down. Even if you have never meditated before and are reluctant, this combo kinda forces the issue. No links, just any kind of Tibetan bell music, any kind of visualizer. try it. you wont need to take drugs anymore.
But I still do because it makes it twice as intense.
Even Peter Gabriel would approve this message.
...also by Peter Gabriel.
mmm... starting to see a trend here?
Oh and for great videos. hard to pick becuase they always change but I always liked this one Go with the Flow Queens of the Stone Age
"Slave to Love"
One of the most beautiful videos ever made IMHO.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSqGwOmKEwU&fe...
"Boys and Girls" is a GREAT album! Talk about lovemaking music...
It is beautiful. Thanks, Van!
Bryan does a live version of Slave to Love after a great version of All Along the Watchtower. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3RxfcO5pNcM
Fantastic musical selection, David!
showing from an established band, did so much with such a little budget and no real bells and whistles, makes a powerful impression, and makes a tiny tiny dent in illuminating the horrors of war, then, I'd have to go with...
Metallica - One
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EzgGTTtR0kc
are always good!
"Human Behavior"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yuwiYq50gwA
.
audio has been removed from all of the copies I could find...
Edit - No it doesn't, not the official, cool video anyway... Crap.
audio here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOZLMYgsS9o&NR...
Smashing Pumpkins - Tonight Tonight
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQSxwzOngMU
and
Pink Floyd - Learning to Fly

Chemical Brothers-Let Forever Be
Close to the Edit.
This one is from 1983, it's by XTC
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ngOjVt0X1i4
Gary Jules' version of Mad World, with almost 17 million views.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4N3N1MlvVc4
...and this fan video (not mine) of Brian Eno's The True Wheel. A perfect match of music to imagery.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bPbToMJmCI
Gary Jules' Mad World is awesome. And Michel Gondrey directing. When he's involved, even if you don't like the song, you probably the vid.
Here's another Michel Gondrey creation. Radiohead - Knives Out
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vgMYcMROcc&fe...
aren't awesome vids. All Michel Gondrey
Chemical Brothers - Let Forever Be
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hmpxsk3dHaA&fe...
The White Stripes - Fell In Love With A Girl
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRDi67G0Siw&fe...
And something a little different: Cody Chestnutt - King of the Game
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TxtdifKKgcI&fe...
a Peter Gabriel / Michel Gondrey combo
Dance Tonight

I think the cameras were coal-fired ...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JxzJAF1BxP4&fe...
afterall Bob Marley wrote and sang Red Red Wine:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIXFxulbGjI&fe...
Red Red Wine was actually written by Neil Diamond, believe it or not.
Bob Marley never covered it. I think you might be thinking of UB40.
in terms of anticipating the years of BushHell that followed it's
release, I got's to go with MC900FtJesus:

... great album.
However, I am NOT one of those who think Genesis suffered terribly with Peter Gabriel's departure. They were good with him -- and good without him. (I still have to go out and buy 1976's "Trick of the Tail.")
BID
The band, Musical Box, out of Montreal has been reenacting Genesis concerts over the last few years. They have studied films, recreated instruments, sets, dialog, costumes and mannerisms, licensed specific performance and design elements from Genesis - and have created a time travel flashback experience that must be seen to be believed.
I saw the original Genesis tours circa 73 to 79, and these guys nailed the performances of the Peter Gabriel era.
Now they are putting together the first of the Phil Collins era with the Trick of the Tail tour. I know they are coming to Chicago for two nights in February. Check your local venues to see if they are coming to your town. Definitely worth a trip to frigid Chicago!

which is also a monster guitar lesson:

Willie Nelson is the best! I love him.
Thank you, lafingas!

never seen it before ...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iezk-z6hy9k&fe...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tJXjt5D4zY&fe...
That was simply outstanding!
I had no idea this kind of thing was around ... to see him doing the same
great songs 25 or so years later ..amazing.
For my money, this is still my favorite Gabriel vid.

living in the heart of the beast, finale.
Now is the time to begin to go forward - advance from despair,
the darkness of solitary men - who are chained in a market they cannot control -
in the name of a freedom that hangs like a pall on our cities.
And their towers of silence we shall destroy.
Now is the time to begin to determine directions,
refuse to admit the existence of destiny's rule.
We shall seize from all heroes and merchants our labour, our lives, and our practice of history :
this, our choice, defines the truth of all that we do.
Seize on the words that oppose us with alien force;
they're enslaved by the power of capital's kings
who reduce them to coinage and hollow exchange in the struggle to hold us,
they're bitterly outlasting...
Time to sweep them down from power - deeds renew words.
Dare to take sides in the fight for freedom that is common cause
let us all be as strong and as resolute.
We're in the midst of a universe turning
in turmoil; of classes and armies of thought
making war - their contradictions clash and echo through time.
Shock The Monkey from his 1982 album Security.
Frankie Goes To Hollywood - Two Tribes.
Prince - Raspberry Beret.
Nirvana - Heart Shaped Box.
David Bowie - Ashes To Ashes. Blue Jean is pretty good.
Bauhaus - She's In Parties.
Johnny Cash - Hurt.
Talking Heads - Once In A Lifetime.
Devo - Whip It and Beautiful World.

If Keats's most famous proposition is correct, then this is the most gorgeous video ever made:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qiSkyEyBczU
The perfect combination of live performance and video by the best rock band in the world. And it's got Billy Preston!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WtUgrolYxro
Frank Zappa - City of tiny Lites 1977 Live
I'll always remember R.E.M.'s Losing My Religion video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NV9zZbJcUic
Heh, art wise I've not seen anything that tops Michael Nesmith's Rio, the FIRST video!
Thriller was huge, and so was Beat It . . . and Billy Jean, but they weren't Rio.
*G*
/oldfartgeezervidkid
Leftfield - Afrika Shox
Soundgarden
but really, i still consider Devo's Whip It to still be the best.
Freak on a leash video is a cool piece of technical artistry
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fY_yjPvHQwY&fe...
Chocolate Rain!!!
Brown showers?
You're Addicted to Love.
I Didn't Mean To Turn You On.
The Divinyls.
Blondie. Rapture.
The Verve. Bittersweet Symphony.
Steve Winwood. Dirty City. This isn't the official video. I like it.
This is the official vid. Still good. But I like the 1st one better.
More Winwood. Just for Listening. I'm Not Drowning
And finally, probably the most popular video of all time.
Thriller. Michael Jackson.
He wrote my favorite song
Spank the Monkey.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0JBeZUwhAqM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fb5LIo6HE6Y
"Here Without You" by Three Door's Down. However this video was made using the animation from World of Warcraft. It takes an otherwise forgettable song and constructs a rather impressive narrative.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFM140rju4k
"The Golden Age of Video" by Ricardo Autobahn. A remix utilizing dialogs from various television shows and movies as the lyrics. Just pure geek goodness.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhzJO34SCoc
"Memories" by Within Temptation. (Not the song from the feline musical.) Only submitted because Sharon Den Adel is just a goddess.
Arcade file - My body is a cage
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pyp34v6Lmcc
The reason why I'm not sure counts is because they simply used existing footage from "Once upon a time in the west". The credit should belong with the original firm maker, not the engineer that spliced it up to the music.
All the same, it's my favorite recent video.
The Chemical Brothers - Let forever be (Gondry)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHpgycHaK_8
Aphex Twin - Window Licker (Cunningham)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QpjqhZznBVc
And others still watch them?
I had no idea.
Wire-Ahead
Tears For Fears - Sowing The Seeds Of Love
Nick Cave - Where the Wild Roses Grow
The Replacements' "Bastards Of Young" is still great, an anti-video video.
http://www.metacafe.com/watch/2973084/replace...
If you're not impressed, Queen's "Innuendo" still stands up for artistic and technical brilliance.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cpys1c3jCNs
I see that my post has been reinstated, rather than "removed for violating terms of service".
Just for curiosity's sake, was it software that flagged my post because of the name of The Replacements' song? Or was it someone being overzealous about use of any such words?
Or did someone just not like my taste in music?
...then I found out Peter cited Frank Zappa as someone who was doing this stuff well before he did. Check out Bickford's animation work on Zappa's Baby Snakes or some of the other songs he animated to.
"Cloudbusting" by Kate Bush is a pretty good one. My favouite recent video is "Daniel" by Bat For Lashes. My all time fav is probably "The Bad Touch" by the Bloodhound Gang. It's so dumb it's brilliant.
Oh yeah. "Cry" by Godley and Creme. Kinda started all that morphing stuff if I remember right.
Gotta be the "best"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmVAWKfJ4Go&fe...
Radiohead's "Pyramid Song" -- I watched this in way-too-close proximity to having seen the movie A.I.:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqP0WNpojFM
And some Peter Gabriel news, about an orchestral song-swap project of his coming in January! Wheee!
http://pitchfork.com/news/36940-peter-gabriel...
I'm also from Montreal. Does the lead singer dress up like a flower pot like Gabriel did for those early shows?
For me it has to be muse - knights of cydonia
Lasers, unicorns, robots, ninja cowboys. What more could you possibly want?
