C&L's Late Nite Music Club with Peter Gabriel
By David Neiwert Monday Oct 26, 2009 7:31pm
(From the Secret World Live disc.) In the '80s and '90s I did a fair amount of music writing as a freelancer, and in that time I saw probably over a hundred concerts, including a lot of great grunge shows in the '90s. Still, seeing Peter Gabriel on the '93 Secret World Tour -- he played locally at the Tacoma Dome, but the show looked identical to the one captured here, in Italy -- remains probably my favorite. Gabriel's songs mean a lot to me personally ("In Your Eyes" was "our song" when my wife and I were dating), but the show was just riveting, and the talent (Youssou N'dor, Paula Cole, Tony Levin) was awesome. I also have a cool big-disc 45 of this song, which included an extended version that included the line poem at the end ("Accepting all I've done and said ..."), which does not appear on the album version, but is included here. Of course, on this song, even in the live performance, you can't help being reminded of Lloyd Dobler standing outside Diane Court's window with his music blaster.

That was truly spectacular. I love your musical selection tonight, David!
Many thanks!
Excellent choice.

Thanks, mud, I love it!
I Grieve.
Had to be one of the best tours of all time. It was the perfect mix of theatricality and concert production, and every song was great. Peter Gabriel at the top of his game. A perfect choice.
Also, do right wing websites do fun things like post amazing music videos? I doubt it. Just another reason that life is better lived as a liberal.
You have been a great addition to Crooks and Liars and to my Life.
Great time, but I got waaay to stoned to really appreciate the show fully.
I prefer earlier stuff, some of which is truly haunting:

Good Night folks.
Be well.
Sweet dreams to you, mudshark.
It didn't end well.
Genesis' Selling England By The Pound reaches #12 on the charts.
I remember seeing him on the Amnesty International tour in the late 80's.
That was something else.
I have this same ticket stub:

He's one of my all-time favorites. I wish he made more music these days, but he does produce a lot of other people's stuff. I saw him in concert a few years ago with Blind Boys of Alabama opening. It rocked.
Here's his cover of "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa" (the original name-checks him):

the impact he has had on music. From his early days with Genesis up until very recently, he's been one of a handful that truly creates.
Huge thanks for digging this one up for us. Absolutely beautiful!
Peter Gabriel was Genesis to me. Since he left I haven't bought any of their music. I had all the vinyl in the 70s.
All my close circle of friends through high school, college and to this day are huge Genesis fans. We all met in Chicago in '93 to see this concert tour of Peter Gabriel's, and I remember then always being a much bigger admirer of his music than Genesis' music after he left the band. At our last high school reunion I told them all that I didn't think Genesis' music post-Gabriel has stood the test of time very well, and they all looked at me like I had said something sacrilegious.
There's just hardly any music by post-Gabriel Genesis that still sounds great to me now.
Anyway, great selection. And what a great voice Paula Cole had back then.
I can't believe I agree with dennis on something; I think I'll go buy a lotto ticket today...
Genesis w/ P. Gabriel >>>>> The Phil Collins Group (yuk!)
Agreed his was my favorite concert of them all. We sat in our seats for a long time after it was over, recovering from the intense awesomeness.
What a way to start my morning. I had mostly stopped listening to rock by the time Gabriel came along, but I would hear this song from time to time, and it just blows me away. One of the most compelling voices in any genre. Whew!
I thought that 93 tour was kind of boring, certainly after sinead left.. I cant stand paula cole, she is terribly unfriendly in person as well. certainly no one deserving of adulation.
I have that "45" as well. Also includes Red Rain, and a version of Mercy Street (not found on the official release) that will make you weep!

I saw that concert when it came to philly. it was a peaceful crowd ready to enjoy great music, and we werent disappointed.
and after all these years he hasnt missed a step with songs like 'burn you up, burn you down' from the fantastic computer game 'Uru: Ages of Myst' and 'down to earth' from 'WALL-E'.
