C&L's Late Nite Music Club: The 50 State Strategy with Motion City Soundtrack (MN)
By MaxMarginal Monday Aug 17, 2009 7:00pmMinnesota is best known, musically and otherwise, for producing Prince and Bob Dylan. Less attention is paid to the way American pop-punk went from boy to man in its cold winters in the 80's, as The Replacements and Husker Du perfected the form with their respective albums Let It Be and Zen Arcade.
Motion City Soundtrack are a few shades more radio friendly then their gruffer, drunker predecessors, but stand apart from the heap of post-Blink 182 pop-punk drivel thanks to gracious helpings of sincerity and cleverness.
Every Monday night, C&L's Late Nite Music Club showcases an act from every state, alphabetically by state, as part of LNMC's 50 State Strategy. Know a band or artist that you think is the best in their state? Email suggestions to latenitemusicclub [at] gmail.com. Next week: Mississippi.

Good times lie ahead for this country. The Cons have pretty much guaranteed a Civil War II.
"Phoenix police said the gun-toters at Monday's event, including the man carrying an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle slung over his shoulder, didn't need permits. No crimes were committed, and no one was arrested."
speechless.
Odd, isn't it? Esp the AR-15...
Back on topic, sort of--

Not that many bands get named after college professors -- Walt Mink that is.
What a revelation.
I had been out of the country for a year, had just gotten back, and I had never heard of them. I go in and the first lazy, thick, thick, thick guitar chords of "Miss Happiness" begin the show, and I'm like "Pshhht. Who does this pasty punk think he is, Hendrix?"
Standing all of five feet in front of the stage and watching his fretboard the entire time, by the end of the song I was like "Whoa, this guy is Hendrix reincarnated."
Sober reflection reveals that John Kimbrough is not Hendrix reincarnated, but he and the band were something different and very special, indeed. The original drummer went on to play for Beck, if I'm not mistaken.
Sadly, Mink ended up one more band destroyed by recording label indentured servitude.
Go forth, ye, and find all the Mink ye can. They do the best Pink Moon cover ever.

And Judy Garland! Major props to Minnesota!
They really do stand apart from many of the post Blink-182 bands. They're A hard working band that tours like crazy and puts out albums on a consistent basis as well.
I like listening to them and trying to hear elements of the bands they say influenced them. The guitarist is heavily influenced by the Pixies and you can definitely hear elements of the Pixies in many of their songs.
Great pick!
12 Rods - Split Personality
Folks, 3 words:
BOILED IN LEAD!!!
Seriously, for non-Minnesotans, you cannot truly understand what we (and I mean most of us from the non-Minneapolis/St. Paul area) are all about.
This is a band that sings about walleyes, "Silvercarp" and hot dish.
They've been one of my personal favorites since I saw them in the 400 bar in 1987. And yes, they still do rock.
TODD LIVES! TODD LIVES!!
Under the "and otherwise" banner, I'd like to add Robert Bly and Kevin McHale. :-)
