C&L's Late Nite Music Club with Peter and Gordon

Title: Woman

We'd like to take the time to note Thursday's passing of Gordon Waller, who comprised half of Peter and Gordon (the other half being Peter Asher). That's Waller singing the lead vocal in this video.

This harmonious pair of British Invasion heartthrobs will always be closely linked with The Beatles, primarily because Paul McCartney pseudonymously authored a number of their songs- including their chart topping A World Without Love, as well as Woman- while Macca was dating Asher's sister, Jane. After Peter and Gordon went their separate ways in 1967, Waller earned considerable success as a record producer. For more, see Gordon Skene's post at our excellent sister site, Newstalgia.

Here's a word from Peter.

Godspeed, Mr. Waller.

They were a great duo.

I grew up listening to Peter and Gordon tunes. That song brought back fond memories of younger days.

My condolences to Gordon's family on his passing.

Great song, great duo. Rest in peace.

who introduced the song?

It aired on Monday, April 11, 1966. Here's the full lineup:

Paul Anka (GH, "What Now My Love?"); The Cyrkle ("Red Rubber Ball"); Peter & Gordon ("Woman","Wrong From The Start"); Lesley Gore ("Young Love"); TPM: Oscar Award songs medley (R August 29, 1966)

(And, of course, I cheated on that. You can find all of the hosts and guests from both Hullabaloo and Shindig right here.)

Hey Andy! Thanks for posting. Nice song. I like this era.

I like the song, too. I'm a sucker for Macca's songs up until Silly Love Songs. And I like that one, too, for purely sentimental reasons.

Gordon Waller had one of the best voices of his generation and while they were active, the sound of Peter and Gordon's records were unmistakable, unique and always welcome on my transistor radio.

I had the good luck of seeing them perform once at a free show, sponsored by the Providence, Rhode Island radio station, WPRO, at Rocky Point Park in the early Summer of 1967. It was open air, the stage was makeshift, and the P.A. system was lousy but who cared? They were excellent. Afterwards, I was even luckier to have them both autograph my copy of their current 45, 'There's No Living Without Your Loving' b/w 'Stranger With A Black Dove'.

And I still have it!

Mr. Waller was an important player during a remarkable and an exciting period in American pop music and his contributions during that time will not be forgotten.

I wish him only happiness as he continues his journey through life.

As Ray Davies once sang: "Thank you for the days!"

Well, now we know where Mike Myers got his inspiration for Austin Powers.

I hadn't heard about Gordon's passing. It's sad news, indeed. A quick correction: There was nothing pseudonymous about McCartney's contribution. His work -- like all the rest of his work at the time -- was credited to Lennon and McCartney.

Well, not exactly. "World Without Love," "Nobody I Know" and "I Don't Want To See You Again" are all credited as "Lennon/McCartney" but in the case of "Woman," McCartney wanted to see if a Paul McCartney song could sell records without his name on it, so he wrote it under the pseudonym "Bernard Webb" (some US Capitol singles list the credit as "A. Smith.") It was only after the record was released and became successful that the author's true identity was made known.

I remember spying on my big sister dancing to True Love Ways wither her boyfriend. Peter and Gordon's cover was, IMO, the best version.......sorry, Buddy Holly.
