C&L's Late Night Music Club With XTC
My brother sent me an email yesterday telling me that LNMC needed some XTC. He was right. This track is off 1986's Skylarking, which was produced by Todd Rundgren and ranked as the 48th best album of the eighties according to Rolling Stone magazine.

I don't give a toss.
I've been looking forward to it since the little baloon popped up.

Probably my favorite group ever. Wasn't this song banned on MTV after only a few playings? Plus, my copy of Skylarking didn't have it.

Does MTV plays music anymore? :)
A song that got banned here was http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJ76EOVpQMM Apotheosis - O Fortuna. That song could not be played on the radio here. LOL.

I don't give a toss.
I don't think it was ever banned, I just remember a different version of it, where the singer is where John Lennon style shades.
MTV forced Berlin to replace their video for Sex (I'm a..) with Masquerade, and Frankie Goes to Hollywood had to change their video for Relax.

'Dear God' was a "throwaway song they didn't care for" and it was the B-Side to the single 'Grass'. When they found that DJs were playing the B-Side, they pulled the album, took off 'Mermaid Smiled' and put on 'Dear God'. 'Mermaid Smiled' was later rereleased, put on the Rag and Bone Buffet compilation.
I'm not sure if your copy is worth anything, but that could be worth a few dollars.

I just heard and saw this the other day. A real video treat with nice mellow song.

Years before I saw the real thing, I had my own version of what the video should look like.
English Roundabout.
In A Yacht Dance.
Melt The Guns.
What is your conceptual, continuity?
XTC's greatest song:

It's Nearly Africa.

As summer draws to an end.
Skylarking was one of the four best hot-weather albums of the eighties, the others being Tinderbox (1986) by Siouxsie and the Banshees; Signals (1982), by Rush; and Heartbeat City (1984), by The Cars.
This is cool:

Got a VERY heavy spot on the rotation at KROQ in LA when I was a teenager. Time to look through all my old boxes of cassette tapes.

OMG thank you I miss this stuff so much. I remember this from my childhood and never got a copy . Good song and group. Thank you for the flash from the past reminder :) . Tip of the hat C&L people .
The world was never enough ! Caught in the culture clash , solitude or unity we all walk are own path's . Single delusional reality or multiple delusion's shared to form a perspective or piece of reality . Pure insanity or sheer genius . Who's perspective
Thanks for this song. Great band. Great song. Perfect lyrics.
Great song! I like the video too...about how people cling to belief.
amazingly underated and little-known, Andy P and XTC are an amazing group of writers and players. Been a huge fan and have most of their releases, and listen to them all the time. SPREAD the word, XTC is one of the world's greatest musical treasures, and appreciated by this lil ol' bassplayer (thebassguy.com)
have you seen jackie?
The song was not a "throwaway." Andy felt it wasn't worded strongly enough to express his true feelings regarding religion, but the main reason it was left off of "Skylarking" was because Todd and the band didn't feel that it fit in with the concept of the record, which was supposed to be a cohesive song-cycle.
By the way, if you love this band you really need to check out their my space page managed by my good friend Todd Bernhardt. Andy, Colin and Dave have all agreed to ongoing interviews with Todd where they talk at length about their music. http://www.myspace.com/xtcfans/
The interviews are in the blog...
LNMC does it again! I love this song and love Skylarking. Andy Partridge is the best. Considering what's going on in this world, this song is just as pertinent today as in 1986. It still makes the hair raise on the back of my neck.
Green Man. No video for it, but there is this:

And give some love to Todd Rundgren too.
